About Mateo
I’m a fashion design major with a strong focus on garment construction, fit, and craftsmanship. My background is rooted in both creative design and technical sewing, with experience working on modern silhouettes, denim, tailoring, alterations, and garment repair. I approach clothing thoughtfully, with an emphasis on quality, longevity, and understanding how garments are built from the inside out. Alongside my studies, I work hands-on with clothing through alterations, custom projects, and repairs, which has given me a practical, real-world understanding of fit issues, fabric behavior, and construction challenges. This combination of academic training and applied experience allows me to teach sewing in a way that is both accessible and technically sound. I’m patient, detail-oriented, and focused on creating a supportive learning environment. Whether someone is learning to sew for the first time or looking to refine existing skills, I aim to make the process clear, encouraging, and empowering. My goal is to help students not only complete projects, but to build confidence and independence in their sewing practice.

My lessons are structured, hands-on, and tailored to each student’s goals. As a fashion design major, I approach sewing as both a technical skill and design language. focusing on fit, construction, and intentional decision-making rather than shortcuts or one-size-fits-all methods. I prioritize understanding why techniques work, not just how to complete a step. This helps students build confidence, independence, and transferable skills they can apply across different garments and projects. My teaching method combines clear demonstrations with guided practice. I walk students through techniques step by step, then support them as they work hands-on, offering real-time feedback and adjustments. Lessons can focus on machine sewing, hand sewing, garment construction, alterations, or creative experimentation, depending on the student’s interests and experience level. I adapt each session to the student’s pace and learning style to ensure the process feels supportive and productive.
A typical lesson begins with a short check-in to clarify goals for the session, followed by a demonstration of the relevant techniques. From there, students apply what they’ve learned directly to a project or exercise, with guidance throughout. Each lesson ends with a recap of key concepts and suggestions for continued practice, so students leave with a clear understanding of what they’ve learned and how to build on it.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my fashion design education and my focus on construction, fit, and craftsmanship. I have experience working with modern silhouettes, denim, tailoring, and alterations, and I bring that practical knowledge into every lesson. I aim to create a patient, judgment-free environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and experimenting while still learning professional standards.
These lessons are suited for complete beginners who want a strong foundation, intermediate sewists looking to refine their technique, fashion students seeking additional support outside of class, and designers or creatives working on specific projects. No formal background is required, as each lesson is customized to the student’s level, goals, and interests.
