My mission statement for students is as follows:
- to foster a positive and personal relationship with music
- to instill a strong musical foundation of percussion fundamentals, aural skills, and contextual awareness
- to pursue self-sufficiency by developing practice skills such as goal-setting, discipline, and critical analysis
With these overarching concepts in mind, lessons are individually tailored to accommodate the long-term goals and immediate needs of each student.
A typical lesson will break down into three main sections:
1) Technical study: rudiments, etudes, or coordination challenges
2) Musical study: observation of previous week's homework (song, groove, transcription, etc) followed by feedback
3) Assignment: introduction of new material to be practiced for next lesson
