About David

Musicianship is not just an incredible talent to develop but is good for the head and heart. You won’t only develop the skills to play an instrument to a high standard but a deeper emotional and logical intelligence. I’ve seen what it has done for a number of students and it is a great motivator to spread the joy that learning an instrument can bring people.

I grew up playing saxophone and piano in a number of ensembles and originals projects. Having attained a first class degree in music, I now play professionally as a saxophone player across the world and have experience teaching in a number of contexts such as primary schools, secondary schools & privately. I am DBS checked and have experience teaching SEN and Blind students.

Prior to my work as a professional musician, I achieved Classical & Jazz Grade 8 on saxophone (ABRSM and Trinity respectively) and attained a first class degree in music from the University of Southampton.

About the lesson

As a personable and creative teacher, I use a student-centred approach focusing on music that the student enjoys playing and listening to. This can encompass everything from jazz to classical to hard rock. I enjoy using a harmonic approach to give the student tools to write their own music. This sometimes involves dissecting their favourite songs or pieces to look under the hood and discover why it sounds (and feels) the way it does.
