About Rick
I’m a screenwriter, story developer, script consultant and university lecturer, with more than 15 years’ experience teaching and mentoring writers at undergraduate and postgraduate level. My professional development experience includes work with EON Productions, Talkback / Channel 5 and NVIZ Films, alongside extensive teaching with organisations including the University of Cambridge, London College of Communication, and Raindance.
What I enjoy most about teaching is helping writers find the clearest, strongest version of the story they are trying to tell. Every project arrives with its own possibilities and problems, and I like working collaboratively to uncover what is distinctive about it rather than imposing a fixed formula.
Screenwriting can be exciting, frustrating and occasionally overwhelming, so I try to create sessions that are focused, supportive and creatively energising. I value honest feedback, but also encouragement, curiosity and a sense of momentum.
My aim is to help writers leave each session with a better understanding of their project, greater confidence in their own instincts, and a practical sense of what to do next.

My lessons are practical, collaborative and tailored to the individual writer and project. I use a combination of close script analysis, story structure, character development, scene work and guided questioning to help writers identify what is working, what is not, and how to move the screenplay forward with greater clarity and confidence.
A typical session lasts 60 minutes, although 90-minute development sessions are also available for more in-depth work on a feature, television pilot, treatment or rewrite.
Lessons are suitable for emerging and experienced screenwriters, film and television writers, creative-writing students, postgraduate students, and anyone developing a screenplay, treatment, pitch or original screen project. Whether you are starting with an idea, struggling with structure, preparing a rewrite or developing work for submission, sessions are shaped around your specific goals and level of experience.
