About Sloan

Hi, I'm Sloan, and I've been programming since I was 8 years old. We won't talk too much about how old I am now, except to say that was more than 25 years ago. These days I work in IT administration and do most of my coding in PowerShell and .NET languages (C# and F#), with some JavaScript thrown in for flavor.

I've worked with many different languages in my time - Java, the C family languages, Python, JavaScript, PowerShell...the list goes on. When you've worked with that many languages, picking up a new one is easy. You've figured out what tends to be the same across all languages, and what is specialized to a particular language. But it's possible to learn that without plugging away at it for 20 years first.

Besides being an old programmer, I'm also a mom who teaches my own son in our spare time. There is NO REASON to wait until a child is "old enough" to start learning computer science! The logical thinking skills taught at the very beginning of computer science education will help your little one throughout his or her life - particularly the always-critical problem-solving skills needed to overcome challenges in school, work, and life in general.

FACT: In many college computer science programs, the first two programming classes are considered the "wash-out" courses.

ALSO A FACT: If you have enough background in programming when you walk in the door, those courses are easy.

Most programming courses and tutorials teach a programming language first - if there's any of the theory behind programming in general, it's secondary and not very well covered. This is great for learning a specific language, but doesn't make the transition to being a well-rounded programmer very easy.

Computer programming sits at the intersection of many specialized subjects - languages, mathematics, and logic are some of the core skills needed to be a successful programmer in any language.

As a hobbyist, the programmer also needs some degree of skill in system design, as they won't be handed requirements for their personal projects, but will need to come up with them on their own. In many of these cases, the hobbyist programmer also needs a certain amount of what we call "domain knowledge" - knowledge specifically about what the program will need to do. (For example, if a programmer wants to write a program to work with the player market on their favorite MMORPG, they will need some level of understanding of accounting and finance.)

I teach this core theory behind computer programming, along with the language of the student's choice, to students from K-12. For older students, I also teach the system design skills needed to successfully design and build their own projects, as well as how to learn the domain knowledge they need for their particular program's functioning. For students already in university-level courses, I can provide tutoring for specific questions and hurdles you're facing in class, to help you keep up with the flood of information you're getting from your professors.

I start with students at all skill-levels.

For fresh beginners, we obviously start at the very beginning with exercises in algorithmic thinking and very basic programming instructions.

For students with some experience, the first 1-3 sessions will consist mostly of understanding their current level and seeing where we need to fill in any gaps before moving on.

I work with children of all ages from K-12.

For the little ones, I will work with the parents to decide on the best schedule - where older students may do fine with an hour session once or twice a week, parents of little kids know that the attention span of a 5-7 year old is much, much shorter! If your child would thrive best on a 20-minute lesson, three or more times per week, I will do my best to accommodate.

For elementary age students, I charge a weekly rate that covers all sessions in the agreed schedule. Given that children can decide from one minute to the next that they don't like something anymore, I make sure to keep those rates reasonable.

For older students - middle and high school - I can also do a weekly rate, but do also offer the more simple per-hour rate.

For all K-12 students, there may be licensing costs for the tools used in our sessions. These are typically minor but will need to be covered on a monthly basis. I don't mark up the cost of licenses; it's a straight reimbursement. While those licenses are active, however, the student is free to use them however they please, subject to my usage agreements and privacy policy.

For university tutoring students, I charge a flat per-hour rate.
