I begin by assessing the student and their challenges in order to adapt my teaching to the student's needs. I look at how they learn, how they use their study time, their level of development, their strengths and challenges, and how they assess themselves. I develop personalized plans according to student needs, providing coaching, encouragement, information, and evaluation at an appropriate level. A flexible thinker and teacher, I am able to provide teaching that works for the individual. I will intervene with more effective approaches when students are not making appropriate progress or are being held back by ineffective approaches or emotional blocks. My corrections are always learning opportunities. I look upon the student-teacher relationship as a team effort. As team leader, I invite and respond to student input and provide leadership aimed at our main goal, which is success in studies and in life.
I am a retired psychology and education professor with many years of experience in tutoring and teaching. I have worked extensively with students with learning disabilities physical disabilities, and other learning challenges, including exam anxiety and lack of confidence. My goal is to help students learn their subjects while learning to be better, more confident students. One of my specialties I call "stats therapy". Many students in the social sciences are not comfortable with numbers. I help them to reduce their anxiety, increase their confidence, and improve performance, I help students to break down complex tasks and use my expertise in cognitive psychology to help them to understand how they learn best, while exploiting their strengths and improving on their weaknesses.
My basic rate is $30 for 1 hour. If I have to travel more than 20km, there will be an extra charge for travel expenses.
