About Daniel
I am a historian, published author, and experienced university tutor with a PhD in History. My academic work has focused on medieval and Irish history, historical research methods, and academic writing, and I have taught students at both Queen’s University Belfast and Trinity College Dublin.
Alongside my teaching experience, I am the author of a scholarly monograph published by Boydell & Brewer, as well as a number of peer-reviewed academic articles. My work has involved helping students develop stronger analytical thinking, clearer writing, and greater confidence in handling complex historical material.
I have experience supporting learners at a range of levels, from GCSE and A-Level students through to undergraduates, postgraduates, and adult learners. I particularly enjoy helping students improve essay-writing technique, dissertation structure, use of evidence, and academic confidence.
Professionally, I have also worked in heritage, public history, and research roles, including archival and policy work. This wider experience allows me to bring practical research skills and clear communication techniques into my teaching.
My approach is friendly, patient, and supportive. I understand that students often need not only subject knowledge, but also guidance on organisation, structure, confidence, and study methods. I aim to create lessons that are engaging, encouraging, and tailored to the needs of each individual learner.

My lessons are designed to help students become more confident, analytical, and effective writers and thinkers. I focus not only on improving grades, but also on helping students understand how to build strong arguments, analyse evidence critically, and communicate ideas clearly.
I tailor each lesson to the individual student’s goals and level of study. For school students, this may involve exam preparation, essay planning, revision techniques, and source analysis. For university students, lessons often focus on dissertation structure, historiography, academic writing, research methods, referencing, and improving clarity and argumentation.
My teaching style is supportive, structured, and discussion-based. I encourage students to engage actively with material rather than memorising information passively. I also provide detailed feedback on written work where appropriate, helping students identify both strengths and areas for improvement.
I hold a PhD in History and have taught at both Queen’s University Belfast and Trinity College Dublin. I am also the author of a monograph published by Boydell & Brewer and have experience teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, supervising research, and helping learners develop advanced writing and analytical skills.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes long and are available online. I teach:
