About James

I'm a fully qualified chemistry teacher with QTS, trained through a school-based teacher training programme where I taught across several secondary schools in Yorkshire.
Before teaching, I studied Biochemistry and Genetics at the University of Sheffield and completed a Master's degree in Biopharmaceutical Development at the University of Leeds. I then worked in the pharmaceutical industry, carrying out laboratory work on the development and analysis of new medicines.
I moved into teaching because I wanted to share my enthusiasm for science with young people, and I bring both classroom experience and real-world scientific knowledge to my tutoring.
I am a calm presence with strong subject knowledge, and an enjoyment of building confidence in exam technique of students.
I hold an enhanced DBS check and follow all safeguarding best practice, including a parent or guardian being present or nearby during in-person lessons with under-18s.

I strongly believe that all my tutees have potential to achieve highly. In a classroom, a teacher moves at the pace of the lesson; in my sessions, we move at the pace of the student. If a concept hasn't clicked, we approach it from another angle until it does. If an explanation isn't landing, I change the explanation, not the student.
I'm a qualified chemistry teacher (QTS) with a background in biochemistry and the pharmaceutical industry, where I worked hands-on in laboratories developing real medicines — so I can show students not just how science works, but why it matters beyond the exam hall.
My lessons are structured around the student achieving maximal marks on the exam. I begin by finding out exactly where a student is: what they're confident with, where the gaps are, and what grade they require and what methods they are used to using in School. From there, every session follows a clear pattern — I model how to approach a problem step by step, we work through examples together, and then the student practises independently while I check understanding and address misconceptions as they arise. This gradual approach builds genuine confidence rather than dependence on the tutor.
I place particular emphasis on exam technique: understanding command words, structuring extended answers, and mastering the calculation methods that so many students find daunting. All materials are aligned to the student's exam board specification.
Lessons typically last one hour, though this can be adjusted to suit the student. I tutor GCSE students in chemistry, biology and physics (combined or separate science), and A-Level chemistry. I'm patient and calm by nature, and I particularly enjoy working with students who have lost confidence in science — there's no better feeling than watching a pupil realise they can do something they'd written off as impossible.
