About Nate

My name is Nate and I love learning and teaching. Even as an adult, I am excited about learning new things and I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping students to make progress in their own learning.

I was born and raised in western Canada, moving to the UK several years ago. English was the language I spoke at home and in school but I was always very interested in learning foreign languages.

My favourite subject in secondary school was French and I achieved high marks consistently. I was fascinated by the similarities between French and Spanish and decided to choose Hispanic Studies as my minor when I was studying at the University of Victoria. I eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, with distinction.

When I'm not teaching or tutoring, I love keeping active by running, cycling or swimming. I am also a big fan of music, film and television and often work popular culture references into my teaching. I am a sociable person who loves travelling, especially to countries where I can speak the local language and get to meet new and interesting people.

About the lesson

My one-hour lessons are fun, engaging and thorough.

I believe that learning requires the active participation of the learner so I keep my students involved and taking ownership of their Spanish progress. Part of how I do this is by getting my students to communicate from the first lesson using whatever Spanish they know to build their confidence and enjoyment.

Strategic feedback is an important tool for me and I employ this by focussing on only the most significant errors students make. In this way, they correct misconceptions without getting discouraged about their abilities.

I have Qualified Teacher Status and have experience teaching Spanish to classes of learners from primary school to GCSE-level. I often work in age-appropriate games and songs because it IS possible to have fun whilst you're in a classroom!

Having learned Spanish as a second language myself, I can predict and understand the challenges students might have at different stages of their learning journey. More than that, I can help them overcome these challenges and make progress!
