The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a foundational ancient text that guides practitioners through the philosophy and practice of classical yoga. Overview of the Text Definition: The word sutra means "thread" or "aphorism". The text contains 196 short, condensed verses. Origin: Compiled around 400 CE by the sage Patanjali, who gathered older traditions. Goal: To quiet the fluctuations of the mind and achieve spiritual liberation (kaivalya)
