About Megan

I have just completed my exams for my Modern Languages and Cultures degree at Durham University, where I principally studied French and Italian, and I am on track to obtain a high 2:1 or First. I also studied Spanish in my first year, for which I possess an A at A level. I have lots of experience tutoring languages online and face to face at GCSE and A level standard, and I have also proofread various university essays. I am carrying out a Primary PGCE in September so I am looking to gain even more experience working with people in an academic setting. Having lived abroad in France and Italy fir a year, studying at two different universities, I am fluent in both languages and can therefore teach them up to university level, whilst I can teach Spanish to A level standard. Throughout my degree I have also studied the cultures of French, Spanish and Italian speakers, meaning that I am well skilled in analysing books, poems, art and film and can therefore provide excellent help with cultural essays.

About the lesson

My teaching method is very dependent on the person that I am tutoring, as everyone learns in different ways. Generally, in the first session I talk to the client and ask them what they are finding most difficult, what topics or areas they are wanting to go over first, what their expectations are of each session and what kind of teaching methods have helped them most in the past. Together we would then come up with a plan of different sessions that aim to teach them and to help them to improve in the areas that they have identified as weak. In an hour session, normally I like to spend the first 20 minutes explaining a certain topic, for example, how to conjugate and use the future tense, in French. To do this, I use different grammar books, power-points or video clips, so as to make sure that the information is being transferred aurally and visually. I then like to introduce little games, such as cards where you match the stem of the verb with the correct future tense ending, which caters for more kinetic learners and makes the learning more fun and practical. Following this, dependent on the wishes of the client, I like to use the last part of the session for general speaking practice and to practice the grammar topic covered in the session, in real conversation. I believe that speaking out loud not only improves their grasp of the language and the specific grammar point, but builds confidence, which is vital in the study of foreign languages. I then set grammar exercises for homework, which we go over at the start of the next session, where we recap and consolidate what has been learnt.
