About James
I have always had a genuine passion for English and History, finding both subjects fascinating from a young age. I grew up reading widely and developed a strong interest in how ideas are expressed, argued, and interpreted—something that naturally led me to excel in essay-based subjects throughout school and university.
I am currently working in corporate law, where strong communication, clear writing, and the ability to structure arguments are essential skills. The foundations I built through studying English and related subjects have been invaluable in my professional life, and I continue to use them every day.
Alongside this, I miss the academic side of these subjects and enjoy engaging with them in a more thoughtful and analytical way. Tutoring allows me to reconnect with that, while helping students develop the same skills that have benefited me so significantly.
I aim to be a friendly and supportive mentor to students. School and exam environments can often feel intimidating, and I hope to bridge that gap by creating a space where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence at their own pace.
My goal is to help students not only improve their grades, but also develop strong writing and thinking skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom, in further study and future careers.

My approach to tutoring is focused on helping students make clear, practical improvements that lead directly to higher grades.
Teaching methodology:
My expertise lies in English and History, where the key to success is not just understanding the content but knowing how to structure strong arguments and write analytically. My teaching focuses on developing these core skills: building clear essay structures, improving interpretation of texts, and strengthening analysis. I break down what top-grade answers actually look like and help students replicate that in a simple, repeatable way.
Because I’ve recently been through the GCSE and A-Level system myself, I have a strong understanding of the current syllabus, exam expectations, and common mistakes students make. I aim to be approachable and easy to work with, creating a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and building confidence.
Lesson structure and length:
Lessons are typically one hour long. Each session is structured but flexible, usually involving a mix of reviewing previous work, practising exam-style questions, and focusing on a specific skill such as essay structure or analysis. I prioritise active learning so students are consistently applying what they learn.
Qualifications and experience:
I achieved A*s in English Literature, History, and Economics at A-Level, as well as an A* in my EPQ, and I hold a 2:1 degree in English and Philosophy. My academic background has given me strong essay-writing and critical thinking skills, which I aim to pass on to my students in a clear and practical way.
Who the lessons are for:
I aim to teach GCSE and A-Level students, particularly those looking to improve their essay writing, boost their grades, and gain confidence in exams. Whether a student is aiming to move up a grade or achieve top marks, my lessons are tailored to their goals and current level.

Perfect! James was my very first English teacher in England, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I was extremely satisfied with both his teaching methods and his wonderful attitude. He is incredibly supportive and professional. I highly, recommend him to anyone looking to improve their English!
