About Lava
My name is Lava, and I graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences. I have a strong academic background in math and science, particularly Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, and I enjoy helping elementary and high school students better understand subjects they may find challenging.
As someone who has spent many years as a student, I understand how frustrating it can be when a concept doesn't make sense, even after hearing it explained multiple times. I believe that sometimes all it takes is a different explanation, a helpful strategy, or a little extra patience for things to finally click!
I am patient, approachable, and committed to creating a comfortable learning environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions without worrying about making mistakes. I recognize that every student learns differently, and I take the time to understand their needs and adjust my teaching approach accordingly.
My goal is not just to help students improve their grades, but also to build their confidence, develop stronger study habits, and become more independent learners. Whether you are struggling with a particular topic, preparing for an exam, or simply looking to strengthen your understanding, I am happy to help you work toward your academic goals!

A typical lesson begins by asking students what they need help with and encouraging them to show me where they are struggling. I ask them to walk me through their thought process so I can better understand their approach, identify any misunderstandings, and guide them toward the correct solution rather than simply giving them the answer.
When introducing a new topic, I explain concepts using methods and strategies that helped me understand them when I was a student. Having been in their shoes, I understand that sometimes a different explanation or a simple trick can make a difficult concept much easier to grasp. I share helpful tips, shortcuts, and note-taking strategies that students can use when solving problems independently.
My tutoring approach focuses on more than just helping students get the right answers. My goal is to build their confidence, strengthen their problem-solving skills, and help them become independent learners. I want students to leave each session feeling more capable of tackling challenging questions on their own, rather than relying on someone to guide them through every step.
