About Lian
Hello! My name is Lian, I’m a graduate from the Royal Northern College of Music BMus (Hons) course.
I am a professional violinist based in Manchester balancing performing across the world and uk with teaching. Performance highlights include: The Big Night of Musicals on BBC 1, featured on STV What’s on Scotland, SXSW, Bristol Folk Festival to name a few! My performance experience feeds into my teaching philosophy through encouraging students to strive for technical proficiency as a way to inform musical expression.
I have had extensive training in all areas of music i.e. Violin and piano performance, teaching/pedagogy, theory, composition and music history. I studied under Bernard Docherty (ex-leader of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra) as well as taking part in masterclasses with many reputable violinists, drawing inspiration from their teaching philosophies, enthusiasm and energy in music making that I pass on to every lesson I give. I have 6+ years of experience in teaching, as well as this, I have been in different violin teaching roles in different primary and secondary schools as well as delivering teaching workshops with the Manchester Video Game Orchestra, providing outreach music education for children around the country.

There is no ‘one size fits all’ method when it comes to learning the violin! Because of this, my main priorities when teaching vary depending on the age and the experience of the student.
I am really passionate about increasing the confidence of my students and encouraging them to always remain curious and think outside the box. My goal is to make sure that your journey in learning violin is enjoyable through working with you to set short term, achievable goals that contribute to the bigger picture.
In lessons, I like to make sure the student tells me what they would like to work towards (ie. Adult beginner wanting to learn folk tunes). I also like to cover their technique, pinpointing their weakest areas and helping them to overcome difficult obstacles in violin playing. This will be achieved through scales, studies and specific exercises that I like to give out to develop independence and strength in the fingers. As well as this, I will give out repertoire that will both reflect the students' abilities as well as giving them a challenge in certain passages. I understand that playing pieces is a fantastic way to encourage students to practise. They will learn to be both creative yet analytical in their musical understanding and expression.
Each lesson is fully pre-planned and is fully catered to the students' needs so they can leave with a better understanding of their playing, extra help is given if you would also like to create a practice plan to help you fit in practicing into daily life or if you prefer a more structured way of practicing and would like extra support!
Despite being classically trained, I am also experienced in playing in different genres ie. Pop, jazz folk etc! I’m open to working on music that the student is passionate/interested in and will happily include this within lessons!
All is included in the pricing to make sure you feel comfortable and supported in your violin journey.
I am willing to teach students of all ages and at any level up to Grade 8.
