About Scarlett
I'm Scarlett, a second year Modern Languages student at the University of Cambridge, where I study French and Spanish. This year I'm also taking Portuguese and Arabic, so languages are very much at the centre of everything I do.
Alongside my studies I've built up a lot of experience working with young people - I've been a babysitter for five years, I tutor my younger cousin online regularly, and for the past two summers I've helped secondary students with their Cambridge university applications in person, which I've found really rewarding. I also work as an Outreach Officer for the University, where I support open days, act as a panellist giving advice to students during online outreach webinars, and answer questions from prospective students and their families. I am about to enter my year abroad where I will be undertaking 2 internships of 6 months each - one with an NGO that uses sustainable tourism to support local female entrepreneurs in Oaxaca, Mexico; the other with Java Films, Paris - which is Europe's leading independent documentary distribution company promoting independent films from across the world! I am really excited to start my year and believe the experiences and fluency I will gain will add more to what I have already learnt at Cambridge, achieving first-class results in my final year exams.
I have also spent seven months working in a marketing company where part of my role involved creating educational resources and short courses, so I'm used to thinking about how to explain things clearly and make content genuinely accessible.
This year I'll be spending time in Argentina as part of my Year Abroad, working as a teaching assistant in a bilingual school in Buenos Aires, so Spanish is something I'm living as well as studying right now.
I'm patient, organised and genuinely enthusiastic about languages, and I really enjoy seeing students grow in confidence over time.

My lessons are tailored to each student: I start by getting a clear sense of where they are, what they find difficult, and how they learn best, and I build from there.
For Spanish, I think confidence in speaking is often the hardest part, so I make sure there's always space to practise conversation alongside grammar and vocabulary - not just written exercises. I want students to feel comfortable making mistakes, because that's genuinely how language learning works.
I'm currently in my second year studying Modern Languages at Cambridge, which means I'm still very much in the process of learning languages myself. I think that actually helps, as I remember what it feels like to find something confusing, and I'm good at breaking things down clearly and patiently rather than just expecting things to click immediately.
Sessions are structured but not rigid. I'll always have a clear focus for each lesson, but I'm happy to slow down, change direction, or spend more time on something if that's what's needed. The goal is always for the student to leave feeling like they've actually understood something, not just got through the material.
