About Ruairí
I’m Ruairí, a traditional Irish musician from County Cavan, playing flute and tin whistle since I was young. Competing and performing at a high level has shaped how I play and how I teach.
In 2025 I won both Senior Flute Slow Airs and Senior Whistle Slow Airs at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, and placed second in Senior Flute. In 2026 I won the Senior All-Ireland Céilí Band title with Lissadell Céilí Band in Belfast. I’ve also received the TG4 Meitheal Performance Award and achieved one hundred percent in my Leaving Certificate Music practical.
But results only tell part of the story. I’ve taught for several years, in a primary school, privately from home, and on the Music Generation panel for flute and tin whistle and it’s the part of music I enjoy most. I teach because this music was passed on to me by brilliant players, and I want to pass it on: patiently, honestly, and in a way that makes you want to keep playing.

Every lesson is built around you: your instrument, your level, and what you want from your playing.
• Beginners: fingering, first tunes, rhythm, and learning by ear
• Improvers: ornamentation (cuts, taps, rolls, crans), tone, breathing, phrasing, and style
• Advanced: slow airs, building sets, speed and fluency, and Fleadh preparation
• Exam students: repertoire selection and polishing a Junior Cycle or Leaving Certificate practical programme
A typical lesson mixes learning new material by ear, refining tunes you already have, and fixing the small technical details that make the biggest difference. I keep things relaxed and encouraging, I’ve taught in primary schools, through Music Generation, and privately, so I’m used to pitching things at the right pace. Lessons are available in person or online, for flute, tin whistle, and low whistle
