About Rory
I'm a consultant in the mining and energy sector but have been working in environmental disciplines for nearly forty years. I trained in land and environmental management and worked for some time in National Parks, agriculture and as a wilderness guide. For the past thirty years, I've had senior roles at mine sites, in corporations or consultancies. Because I work on Feasibility Studies, Mine Closure and Rehabilitation Plans, Liability Estimates and Government Approvals I've been exposed to a wide range of environmental and engineering disciplines with respect to how these interface in environmental impact assessments and the planning and project management and execution required in high environmental impact settings. I'm reducing my workload in this area and I also focus on writing novels and some nonfiction (14 so far) and work on community projects in Papua New Guinea. I live on the southern coast of Western Australia.

The approach I take is adjusted to the needs, competencies and most effective means of communicating with the person I'm engaging with. I've prepared and delivered many presentations and conference papers to people ranging from First Nations stakeholders in large development projects, international conference attendees, school classes, individual team members or groups reporting to me in large organisation, corporate leadership of large and mid-cap companies and clients (I'm provide services in the mining and energy sector via a consultancy I founded twelve years ago). This includes multi day structure learning programs about specialist topics. I've been communicating with groups and individuals as a specialist and mentor for over 40 years.
Initially there is an exploration of what the primary learning objectives and subject of the person I'm working with is. Then distilling this into an agreed learning plan targeted at achieving objectives.
The options include:
Structured lessons I have which are adjusted to suit the individual which are presented via in power point presentations supported by notes
A structured discussion based on points which have been determined as the most relevant to the objective of the person involved. This might refer to specific texts or subject areas or areas where beneficial in preparation of examinations, assignments or work outputs
Critique or peer review of outputs via a conversation or mark up. I review hundreds of documents a year and can provide detailed comments on a range of issues both technical and narrative. I focus on whether the scope (what the receiver audience is looking for or has specified) is met by the work
I can provide presentations and examples of specific technical methods such as how to complete a risk assessment, how to manage a scope and manage geochemical/hydrological/land rehabilitation study for which templates and de-identified real world examples can be supplied.
Finally if the individual I'm engaging has their objectives met via a simple and brief (if that’s all that required) question and answer format with specific needs addressed that fine also.
Because the roles I've filled and services I deliver I can provide both basic and more advanced tutoring on specialist subjects but also project management and the range of processes which are common to large organisations
