About Sydney

With four years of experience as a tutor and TA, I’ve worked with students at every stage, from middle and high school to college, helping them build a strong foundation in Computer Science and beyond. I’ve also gained valuable industry experience through two internships at Microsoft, where I worked as a Software Engineering Intern, and in my work as an IT Specialist at Amherst College, where I currently attend. I believe that mastering the fundamentals is key to tackling complex concepts, no matter your skill level. My approach emphasizes breaking down challenging problems into manageable steps while creating an engaging and supportive environment. I strive to make learning an enjoyable experience because I know that frustration can stand in the way of progress. Whether you’re diving into the basics or exploring advanced topics, I’m here to guide you with patience, expertise, and enthusiasm. About the lesson

Hello! My name is Sydney, and I am a senior Computer Science, English and Philosophy triple major at Amherst College. I have been tutoring students all four years at Amherst as a TA and tutor, but my experience with teaching goes far beyond that—I have been tutoring students in Computer Science since 2020, and have had a passion for the field just about my entire life. With all that said, I have extensive experience when it comes to working with individuals from all walks of life, and the things I prioritize as a tutor are, more than anything, the fundamentals. It sounds silly, but even the most experienced developers need to step back from time and reexamine things that seem simple to make sure that they've really got a grasp on more complex topics. The second most important thing is to have fun! CS can be tough, but I work hard to make sure it doesn’t get frustrating and stays as engaging as possible. It's important that people see the best part of CS—actually solving problems—instead of getting roadblocked again and again. A typical lesson plan will involve us going over the problem you've been tasked with, and then breaking it down slowly. It's hard to come up with a solution to a problem you don't totally understand. From there, we'll work together-every student is totally different, and I have different approaches for every person. My lessons are focused in Computer Science, and are open to primarily high school and college students.
