About Harold
I am a Sketchup Specialist with experience spanning over 11 years. I am currently working full-time as a Design Architect for a very reputable Company with a portfolio of projects ranging from $1,000,000 to over $10,000,000.
My Sketchup experience continues to advance with the ever updating patches. Not only do I pride my work in Sketchup, but also consider myself an enthusiast, constantly refining strategies and techniques in Sketchup to efficiently improve the design and documentation workflow in an Architectural environment.
In my experience, Sketchup is a platform that is underutilised in the Architectural community as there are many other competing software with similar functions that have roots predating that of Sketchup. As a fairly young program, there are a lack of advanced users and consequently - exposure to its potential is low.
During my time working in Architectural firms, I am proud to have successfully opened the doors for Sketchup in all phases in the design life cycle. As an advanced user, not only have I provided exposure and confidence to the platform, but I have also efficiently increased productivity, quality and client satisfaction with my work. With my advanced 3D modelling skills in Sketchup, the companies I have worked for now swear by it, as an unprecedented powerful tool.

The first and most important skill to learn in Sketchup is to get familiar with the User Interface and basic tools.
Learning fundamentals will be next in priority.
- How does Sketchup process information and what are its limitations?
- What are the minimum hardware requirements to use Sketchup?
- How to model 2D information into 3D using basic tools and settings
- Understanding coordinates, orientation and the Sketchup modelling Axis
Once the basics and fundamentals are well-versed, the next natural step will be to learn how to model architectural elements and how to set up the 3D space so it is most efficient for visual communication.
- Learning how to use Groups and Components
- Learning how to use Layers
- Setting up Scenes (Plans, Elevations, Sections, Details and 3D views)
- Setting up Styles for visual clarity and appeal
All the above are still considered beginner tasks. Once the user has a good understanding of those skills, they can then be applied to an Architectural environment. The following techniques and skills are based on real-world applications that I have formulated over the past decade. They require advanced knowledge of Sketchup tools, best practices and workflow.
- How to use Land Survey drawings from Land Surveyors to accurately model Title boundaries, services, and buildings in 3D
- How to accurately model existing terrain and/or ground conditions using 2D or 3D Land surveys
- How to accurately model a 3D building using 2D Land surveys
- How to create a maximum building envelope using Rescode or setbacks that are location specific
- Advanced layer template setup for Architectural applications
- Advanced 3D modelling techniques for retaining a clean and fast working space
- How to effectively and efficiently model floor zones
- How to effectively and efficiently model walls
- How to effectively and efficiently model roofs
- How to effectively and efficiently model or import interior and exterior fitouts
- How to effectively and efficiently model exterior site works
- Exporting techniques for scaled drawings for Town Planning, client presentation or workshopping
- Exporting techniques for 3d views
- How to create Town planning drawings from a Sketchup 3D model in Layout
- How to organise drawings in a portfolio of works
- How to visually improve raw Sketchup exports in Photoshop (Beginner to Advanced lessons available)
- How to visually improve presentation drawings using Vray for Sketchup visualisation (Beginner to Advanced level lessons available)
The above is a condensed version of all the skills required to become a proficient Sketchup User. Many more skills and techniques will be learned over discourse and personalised to the needs of the student.
