About Alafiya
Work Experience:
13 years as a software engineer, including a role at Microsoft, working across the full stack — building, debugging, and shipping production software used by real users at scale. I'm currently pursuing a Master's in Machine Learning and AI, which means the AI concepts I teach aren't secondhand — I'm actively studying and applying them myself, in parallel with teaching. This matters for coding and AI specifically: most kids' coding instructors learned a curriculum to teach it; I use these tools and concepts in my actual work, which means I can answer the "but why does it work this way" questions that scripted curricula can't.
Teaching Experience:
I've been teaching coding and AI to kids for 2 years, after realizing most "kids coding" programs teach tool-clicking, not thinking. My approach is built around a framework I developed myself — PILOT (Purpose, Info, Limits, Output, Target) — which mirrors how I actually structure problems as a working engineer, simplified for kids to internalize. In AI specifically, I don't just show kids how to use AI tools — I teach them to understand what's happening underneath: how a model is prompted, why it responds the way it does, and where its limits are. That's the same reasoning skill they'll need whether they end up in software, robotics, or any AI-driven field over the next decade. Every class is project-based — kids build something functional every session, not just complete worksheets.

Most "coding for kids" classes teach tool-clicking. I teach how to think like a programmer — the same reasoning I use daily as a working software engineer (ex-Microsoft) — so what your child learns here doesn't expire when the app's UI changes next year.
Who I teach:
Kids ages 8–16, grouped by ability into three tiers:
Explorer (ages 8–10): visual/block-based logic, first real projects
Builder (ages 10–13): Python fundamentals, algorithmic thinking, real small apps
Innovator (ages 13–16): AI/ML basics, applied projects, portfolio-building
