About Jon
I am a dedicated K-12 Special Education tutor who meets the student where they are. I focus on empowering students to achieve independence and academic growth. My approach is comprehensive, targeting not only academic skills but also the crucial executive function and emotional development necessary for success. I specialize in systematic, explicit instruction for Basic Reading and Math, building strong foundational skills using evidence-based methods. Beyond academics, I equip students with essential Study Skills like organization and planning, and foster key Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and Social Skills, including self-advocacy and effective conflict resolution. My goal is to create a supportive learning environment where students understand their unique strengths and are confident in applying their new strategies across all environments.

As a Special Education tutor, my curriculum is built on closing skill gaps and fostering independence across four key areas for my K-12 students.
Academic Intervention (Basic Reading & Math)
I focus on foundational skills using highly explicit and systematic methods. In Basic Reading, I use the Science of Reading principles to teach Phonological Awareness and Phonics, ensuring my students can decode accurately. I build Fluency through repetitive reading and directly teach advanced Reading Comprehension strategies, such as visualizing and analyzing non-fiction text structures, which are vital for my older students. In Basic Math, I follow the CRA (Concrete-Representational-Abstract) framework. My sessions involve using manipulatives to build strong number sense before moving to abstract equations. I am responsible for building operational fluency (fact mastery) and teaching a structured strategy for breaking down and solving complex word problems.
Study Skills & Executive Function
A major part of my job is teaching students how to learn independently. I explicitly teach Executive Function skills. This includes helping my students set up reliable Organization systems (like color-coded binders or digital file trees) and learn effective Planning by using a planner to map out long-term projects with mini-deadlines. I teach methods for overcoming procrastination, like the "5-Minute Rule" for Task Initiation, and train students on specific strategies to boost Working Memory and recall, such as using mnemonic devices or structured note-taking.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) & Social Skills
I teach social and emotional competence using structured, intentional methods like role-playing and Social Stories. In SEL, I guide students in developing Self-Awareness by helping them identify their emotional state and triggers. Crucially, I teach and model specific Coping Strategies (e.g., taking a break, deep breathing) to regulate those emotions. My focus on Self-Advocacy empowers students to politely communicate their needs and accommodations to teachers. In Social Skills, I start with basic Non-Verbal Communication (eye contact, body language) and progress to complex skills like Perspective-Taking and using "I" statements for effective Conflict Resolution. I also address modern communication, ensuring my older students understand the nuances of digital interactions.
