About Vance
I have spent eleven years helping more than 360 students achieve outstanding results in mathematics examinations and competitions. My academic background includes a degree in mathematics from a top university and several years of experience as an examination marker, which gives me unique insight into how marks are awarded and lost. I have prepared students for GCSE, A-level, IB, STEP, MAT, and university entrance examinations with consistently excellent outcomes. Many of my students have gained admission to Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, and other world-class institutions. I am particularly skilled at working with high-achieving students who need to refine their technique and with struggling students who need to rebuild their foundations quickly. My teaching style is direct, challenging, and supportive, pushing students to perform at their highest level while providing the guidance and resources they need. I maintain an extensive archive of examination papers, worked solutions, and strategic guides. Outside of teaching, I compete in mathematics competitions, coach school math teams, and enjoy strategic board games. I believe that examination success in mathematics is a combination of deep understanding, strategic preparation, and psychological readiness, and I am committed to developing all three in every student.

My mathematics teaching is strategic and goal-oriented designed to maximize student performance while building genuine understanding. I begin every tutoring relationship with a comprehensive assessment of the student's current position, target goals, and time constraints. Based on this analysis, I create a personalized study plan that prioritizes high-impact topics and addresses critical weaknesses. For examination preparation, I teach students to recognize question types, identify the required techniques, and execute solutions with speed and accuracy. I emphasize the development of mental calculation skills, estimation techniques, and error-checking habits that save valuable time during tests. Pure mathematics is taught with attention to proof techniques and logical structure, while applied mathematics is taught through modeling exercises that develop translation skills. I use past papers extensively but strategically, teaching students to learn from mistakes rather than simply completing papers for volume. Every lesson includes targeted practice on weak areas, mixed review of previously mastered topics, and preview of upcoming challenges. I also teach stress management techniques, examination strategy, and the psychology of high-performance testing. My sessions are intense, focused, and highly productive.
