About Shreya
Teaching Spanish, to me, is about building bridges between people through language and culture. My instructional approach is rooted in communicative language teaching, which prioritises real-life interaction and practical usage over rote learning. I encourage students to actively engage in conversations, debates, role-plays, and storytelling from the earliest stages, fostering a safe and supportive atmosphere where mistakes are seen as opportunities to learn. Grammar and vocabulary instruction are always contextualised within meaningful communication tasks, helping students understand the function of language structures rather than merely memorising rules. I integrate cultural lessons throughout the curriculum, highlighting the diversity within the Spanish-speaking world—from regional dialects and idiomatic expressions to customs and traditions—to enrich learners’ perspective and global awareness. I make use of authentic materials like music, films, news articles, and interviews to expose students to different accents and contemporary language use. I also prioritise personalised feedback and goal setting, adapting lessons to suit each learner’s strengths and interests. A memorable success was helping a student prepare for a language immersion trip by building their conversational skills and cultural confidence. I also utilise technology to create interactive, flexible learning environments that extend beyond the classroom, making language practice accessible and enjoyable. Ultimately, I strive to inspire my students to become confident communicators and lifelong learners of Spanish.

I see language learning as an invitation to grow—not just academically, but emotionally and socially. In my Spanish classroom, students build more than vocabulary; they build empathy, confidence, and perspective. I teach through immersion, using Spanish as the main vehicle for instruction and interaction. My methods are rooted in comprehension-based instruction: I use stories, conversations, songs, and images to provide input that is understandable, relevant, and rich in meaning. Grammar is treated as a tool, introduced organically and always tied to a communicative function. I don’t ask students to memorise verb charts in isolation—instead, we use those verbs to tell stories, express opinions, or solve real-world problems. Culture is inseparable from my curriculum. Every topic we explore—from food and family traditions to migration and music—helps students understand not just how Spanish is spoken, but how it’s lived. One of my favourite class moments was when we recreated a Latin American marketplace in class, complete with bargaining in Spanish and handmade products; students were learning language, economics, and cultural nuance all at once. I also value autonomy and creativity in learning. I design tasks that allow students to express their personalities, like creating video diaries, writing dialogues, or composing playlists with thematic annotations. Technology enhances our work, especially tools that allow for repetition and feedback outside the classroom. Ultimately, I want students to experience Spanish as something joyful and powerful—a way of making connections they might never have imagined before.
