About Alex
I have worked in an educational setting for over three years, and with youth for more than five years. I am known by colleagues and parents for my respect towards the students. I believe in the natural intelligence and value of a young person's mind and their intrinsic desire to develop as a human being.
I am nearing the end of a college-level program in Special Care Counselling, as much of my work experience has been with autistic children and youth ages 6-21.

My approach is student-driven, meaning I am interested in supporting the student to learn about their own interests. I believe curriculum content is important, but that the value of curriculum content is not always self-evident, especially to young learners.
This approach can supplement curriculum content by allowing students to discover, on their own, the usefulness of math and language skills in the context of their own desire to learn, driven by their interest and curiosity.
I am attentive to development of student capacities for independence as a learner and the acquisition of skills that will applicable for the rest of their life as a self-motivated, curious person.
Through conversation with parents and the student as well as observation, we would identify and agree on pathways for learning. I would then design opportunities for the student to encounter their subject matter as concretely as possible in order to pursue their curiosity. For example, a visit to a nature park or to the planetarium. We might also conduct research together on a computer and learn how to access and interpret information on the internet.
By combining different strategies for learning, the student will get to experience various approaches to their subjects of interest and may begin to develop a sense of how they learn best. In the case of a young child it may be that the child's caregivers are the ones who learn most about how the student learns. This analysis will feed back in to future lessons as the student continues to develop and pursue their curiosity.
