About Gokul
About the instructor: Gokul Panda is one of the most established and popular names in the field of classical percussion music at present in New Jersey. Gokul was introduced to the world of music through tabla, at the age of four, by his first guru, his father. He then took his training from Pandit Anil Bhattacharya in Lakhnaw Gharana Style. Later, he got the blessed opportunity to learn under able guidance of the living legend of tabla, Pandit Shankar Ghosh in Farukkabad Gharana. After Guruji's sad demise Gokul is farther trained under Pandit Biplab Bhattacharya, an young faculty of ITC Sangeet Research Academy of Kolkata India.
Gokul played Tabla solo and accompanied many famous TV and Radio artists in USA, UK and India. He runs a tabla school in Edison. With 25 years of experience teaching and performing he has developed an unique technique mingling both Lakhnaw and Farukkabad Gharana style of Tabla playing with sweetness, clarity and elegance of performance.
Many of his students have begun performing already and are being recognized for their skill and knowledge.

How do classes work? One to one individual classes are of 30 min.
Group classes are generally 3-5 in size with each student receiving individual attention. Students are given material and exercises based on their own level, skill & progress. They are not expected to keep pace with others or follow a uniform curriculum. This is how Indian music is traditionally taught; with the intention of developing concentration and focus, as well as motivating (by giving students a glimpse of what lies ahead).
Will I need to purchase my own Tabla-s?
Yes, each student must have their own drums when they come for the first lesson. Additionally, they will need to bring to each lesson a binder, pen/pencil & (if they choose) recording device.
Students Learn:
The different parts of the Tabla, description of strokes etc.
Basic strokes & exercises & language of Tabla
Compositions with increasing complexity
Taal-s / Tala-s : structure, playing, reciting
History & theory of Tabla and North Indian music
The technical & aesthetic concepts required for improvisation.
Basic-to-advanced accompaniment (playing to chanting, prayer, non-devotional music & eventually classical & semi-classical music).
And much more (students' personal goals are always taken into consideration).
