About Devi Harikumar
I am Devi Harikumar Nair, born in Trivandrum, Kerala, completed my Civil Engineering Studies at UNSW Sydney and now work on one of Australia's largest substation projects, Project Energy Connect.
Beyond my engineering career, I am a trained classical dancer, having begun my journey at the age of 5 and devoted the past 20 years to learning and practicing dance. I pursued my passion under the guidance of Guru Smt. Kalakshetra Parvathy Sasidharan, a disciple of Kalakshetra, Madras in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi and Guru Smt, Shrita Bhaskar, Chennai, in Kathak.
With over a hundred performances to my credit, I have graced prestigious stages including Vylopilli Samskriti Bhavan - a cultural institution under Kerala's Department of Culture - and Kerala's largest government-sponsored festival, Onakosham, among many others. I am also a proud winner of State-level Kalolsavams and several intercollegiate dance competitions, achievements that reflect my artistry, discipline and passion.
Dance has always been my passion, and no matter the circumstances, I have always returned to it. My journey in dance has never been anything less than exciting. I have always loved practicing for hours, dressing up for performances, and feeling that final, heavy heartbeat just before stepping onto the stage, I cherish every part of it.
To me, dance is not just movement, it is spirituality, culture, and storytelling. My dream is to create a space to celebrate creativity and individuality.

Hi, I’m Devi Harikumar, a passionate Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher based in Sydney. Dance has always been a big part of my life, and I love sharing this beautiful classical art form in a way that is enjoyable, structured, and confidence-building for every student.
My teaching style is patient, supportive, and step-by-step, especially for beginners and children. I focus on building strong fundamentals first and then gradually introducing choreography and expressions so students feel comfortable and confident as they learn.
My teaching methodology
My classes typically include:
• Warm-up and stretching
• Practice of basic adavus (steps) and posture
• Hand gestures (mudras) and facial expressions (abhinaya)
• Rhythm, coordination, and balance exercises
• Short choreography or dance routine practice
For Bollywood and semi-classical styles, I keep sessions fun, energetic, and easy to follow while still focusing on technique and grace.
I adapt my teaching pace to each student, ensuring they truly understand and enjoy the learning process rather than feeling rushed.
Lesson duration
Lessons are usually:
• 60 minutes (standard)
• 90 minutes for advanced/choreography sessions
• Private or small group classes available
My experience & background
I have trained in Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kuchipudi for 20 years and have performed at cultural programs and events. Alongside my professional career, dance continues to be my passion, and I enjoy teaching students of all ages with patience and care.
