About Kaleb

I am a passionate teacher of mathematics with an undergraduate degree in mathematics education and a graduate degree in statistics on the way. Beyond that, I have experience teaching seventh grade mathematics, College Algebra, and Calculus I; tutoring privately and in and groups; and coaching students in academics. Fundamentally, I am a strong tutor.

Still, I am also a person, and I have a personal reason to pursuing education! One of my main motivations in my career and as a tutor is to see people succeed. I genuinely hope to learn from experiences as a tutor in order to improve my teaching practice, and I hope to use those lessons to help my tutoring clients and students reach their mathematical, professional, and personal goals.

I am also a learner of French! For that reason, I am also willing to give mathematics lessons in French. I do warn, however, that that would be a challenge for both of us. Still, if you would like to work with me and are willing to be patient, I would love to work with you.

As a teacher of mathematics, my primary approach is to guide students through the content by creating experiences for them to explore the concept and then gradually move towards the abstraction. This is in contrast to the standard where students are given a formula, algorithm, or rule and are expected to remember it for the rest of their academic career. With my approach to teaching, students have a much firmer grasp of the material, supporting their long-term success.

For example, we can say that I am teaching a student about adding fractions. Instead of providing a lecture followed by examples, the student and I would use virtual manipulatives to examine the situation in a concrete way. Once they see a pattern about how fractions works, then we move forward with the process. In this way, the student would have the process by the end, but they would also have a deep understanding of the concept for years to come.

What sets me apart from other tutors is that I have a substantial amount of training as an educator in addition to tutoring experience. This means that I am truly able to adapt lessons to a student’s needs. Does a student struggle in class? This may mean that we need a more standards-based approach to get them to where they need to go. Are they performing very well but crave enrichment? This may mean that they need more challenging mathematics that show them the deeper nuances of the subject. Does the student perform well in mathematics but have trouble with academic skills? This may mean that we need to focus on study skills (note-taking, time management, etc) instead of only mathematics. Overall, my education has prepared me to be a flexible teacher and tutor.

My teaching specialization is from seventh through twelfth grade, so that is where my skills are the strongest. However, I am passionate about mathematics as a whole. For that reason, I am willing to tutor any level of mathematics through Calculus I. If you have concerns about how I can help in unique situations as well, please message me.
