About Funda

Merhaba! (Hello!) I am a native Turkish tutor based in London with over 15 years of experience teaching Turkish Language and Literature at university, high school, college, and online.

Who are my lessons for?
• Adults or children who want to learn Turkish from scratch. (30)
• Adults or children looking to advance their Turkish language skills. (30)
• Students preparing for the GCSE exam (35 pounds)
• Students preparing for the A-Level Turkish exam. (40)

My qualifications:
I hold degrees in Turkish Language and Literature.
Bachelor’s (Boğaziçi University)
Master’s (Istanbul University),
Ph.D. (Yildiz Technical University)

As a native Turkish speaker, I’m fluent in English, Arabic, and Persian.

I’ve lived in London for almost five years, where I continue researching and teaching Turkish online. I currently teach online and work as an A-level and GCSE Turkish teacher at a college. I am an associate examiner by Pearson for GCSE and A-Level Turkish exams. Before that, I lived in Istanbul for 20 years and have traveled to other countries for research and study.

About the lesson

One-on-one lessons tailored to your needs. Each session is held online via Zoom, and I’ll share lesson slides via email afterwards. You can also request recordings of the lessons to review later. One hour per week is typically enough due to the comprehensive nature of the content.

Yes, I am a native Turkish speaker.
2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Yasar Kemal is an important writer who leads Turkish literature.
3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?
We say "kolay gelsin" when we see someone working on anything, which means "I hope it gets easy for you."
4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?
I like the harmony and expressions in this language.
5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?
The most difficult part is suffixes, which are quite different than their version in European languages. Because the Turkish language is an Altaic language, it is one of the agglutinative languages.
6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
Because I graduated from Bogazici University where its educational language is English, it was quite weird to read Turkish writers and their books but anylse them as English.
7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
By contacting local people, a person can improve his language. Especially using the language in daily life such as when he is at market, shop or in conversation with a friend might make huge improvement in learning.
8) What makes you a Superprof in language?
I have a Ph.D, M.A., and a Bachelor's degree, all in Turkish language and Literature. I worked as a research assistant and then lecturer in a university in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature. Recently, I have been working as an A-level Turkish teacher in a college in London.
