About Wolfgang

I’m a data scientist with a background in mathematics and data science, as well as experience teaching math and test prep at the high school level. I hold a Bachelor’s degree with a triple major in Mathematics, Applied Computation, and Chemistry, along with a Master’s in Data Science. Over the past 3.5 years, I’ve worked as a data scientist, focusing on machine learning and algorithm development, while also spending 3.5 years teaching and tutoring math, data science, and test prep in both structured and independent settings. My approach to tutoring is structured but adaptable, with an emphasis on building confidence, reducing stress, and ensuring real understanding. I break concepts down step by step, reinforcing them through controlled practice, iterative problem-solving, and real-world applications when relevant. Rather than just drilling formulas, I help students see how topics fit together, making learning more intuitive and engaging. I also focus on creating a comfortable and interactive learning environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and make mistakes without stress or pressure. My tutoring style is conversational and low-pressure, but I still make sure sessions are productive and structured, adapting to each student’s needs—whether they’re trying to deepen their understanding or just need support getting through a difficult subject. More than anything, I aim to understand students as individuals—what motivates them, what challenges them, and how they think. If they’re passionate about learning, I want to help fuel that passion. I take a structured but adaptable approach to tutoring, helping students grasp concepts, complete assignments, and develop problem-solving skills in mathematics and data science. Whether it’s homework support, reinforcing key topics, or preparing for exams, my focus is on clear explanations, active learning, and confidence-building so students don’t just memorize formulas—they develop a broad, conceptual understanding of how and why things work. I also try to ensure application is emphasized when applicable, helping students connect concepts to real-world problems when relevant, particularly as they move toward independent problem-solving. Teaching Method & Techniques: 1. Homework Support & Concept Clarification – I guide students through assignments while ensuring they fully understand the reasoning behind each step, not just how to get the answer. 2. Step-by-Step Explanations with Iterative & Controlled Practice – I introduce concepts in small, logical steps, reinforcing each idea through guided exercises, structured repetition, and increasing problem complexity to build deeper understanding. At every stage of iterative practice, I ensure that students actively engage with concepts before moving forward. 3. Guided Problem-Solving & Intuition (Teach-Back Method) – I encourage students to attempt problems first, guiding them with targeted questions and hints to develop their reasoning. Once they grasp a concept, I have them explain their thought process back to me to reinforce mastery and build confidence in applying what they've learned. 4. Independent Work & Application in Conceptual Understanding – As students transition to independent problem-solving, I focus on integrating applications to deepen their conceptual understanding. This helps students see how ideas connect, recognize when and why certain methods apply, and develop critical thinking skills beyond rote memorization. A Typical Tutoring Session: 1. Check-In & Goal Setting – Identify what the student needs help with (homework, test prep, or a specific concept). Review & Clarify – Address any foundational gaps before moving forward. 2. Concept Breakdown & Example Problems – Explain topics step by step, ensuring students understand both the mechanics and the bigger picture. 3. Controlled Practice – Reinforce concepts through structured exercises and pattern recognition to build accuracy and confidence. 4. Independent Problem-Solving & Application – Students apply what they’ve learned with minimal guidance, working through problems while connecting concepts to practical applications where relevant. 5. Wrap-Up & Reinforcement – Summarize key takeaways, answer lingering questions, and sometimes incorporate lesson review practice for additional reinforcement. 6. Final Challenge or Teach-Back (Optional) – If time allows, I challenge students with a final problem or have them explain a concept back to me to confirm mastery.
