About Maiya

My tutoring approach is backed by a consistent track record of academic success. I maintained a 90%+ average throughout high school English and have continued this momentum into my university career, finishing my most recent semester with a 91% term average.

While this is my first step into professional tutoring, I have years of unofficial experience. I have spent significant time supporting my younger sister, who manages dyslexia as well as ADHD, helping her navigate reading challenges and significantly improve her English grades. This has given me a deep understanding of how to adapt complex information for different learning styles. Additionally, I am the "go-to" editor for my peers, frequently helping friends refine their essays before submission.

Working with children and teenagers is nothing new for me. I spent four summers as a Camp Counselor for a youth cooking camp, where I learned that the key to teaching any new skill (whether it’s a recipe or a rhetorical device) is patience and engagement. I know how to keep a session fun and high-energy while ensuring the student stays focused on their goals.

Mapping the Premise-to-Conclusion Path: One unique skill philosophy students develop is the logical analysis of arguments. Learning how to identify the premises, hidden premises, and conclusions of arguments, as well as the ability to assess them for validity and soundness. We break argumentation down to a science, and knowing this science can help you strengthen your reasoning and analysis skills, as well as help you pick apart poor arguments and identify strong ones. This skill is the ultimate advantage for anyone eyeing a career in Law, Business, or Politics, where the ability to dismantle an opponent's logic and fortify your own is the key to success.

Active Annotation & Critical Defense: I will equip you with the essential skills to engage deeply with any text by identifying rhetorical devices, highlighting logical fallacies, and recognizing thematic shifts in real time. This approach transforms reading from a passive task into something you can truly engage with and find purpose in. In an era of mass media and information overload, critical thinking is your most powerful tool. I will empower you to navigate the digital landscape with confidence, protecting yourself from misinformation while sharpening your analytical abilities to achieve outstanding grades.

From Frustration to Fluency: If you find writing to be dull, have a hard time expressing your thoughts clearly, or feel like your writing is just okay but not exceptional, I’m here to help. Writing shouldn’t feel confusing or frustrating. I can help you turn your ideas into clear, well-organized pieces. I aim to share my love for the arts and help you become a more confident writer and a skilled communicator. These are important abilities for achieving your goals, no matter what they may be.

My area of expertise is primarily in high school-level coursework, but I can adapt my lesson plans for any age group or English proficiency level, including ESL learners.
