About Myles

Attending an Ivy League university and studying at the #1 ranked business school in the world I've tutored and been tutored quite a few times. While not all these experiences have been positive, I've come to learn how to handle different students, their personalities and learning types. I've been tutoring seriously for nearly 7 years now and have helped students increase their SOLs (a Virginia standard of learning test) by over 200 points, have increased SAT scores by 150 to 1550+, helped other students win Diamond Challenge Entrepreneurship competitions, and get students into prestigious schools like Johns Hopkins, University of Virginia, University of Michigan, and more.

Hi, my name is Myles and tutoring has always been a passion of mine. Growing up with two younger sisters I began tutoring before knowing how to ride a bike. Since then, I've helped tutor students from elementary school to college across a wide range of subjects. To me, tutoring isn't about just helping a student get straight A's, a 1550+ on their SAT, or getting into their dream college. It's also about helping them build lifelong skills to make sure that once I've left they'll continue to excel in every aspect of their life. Whether that be their sport, hobbies, or school. As an Ironman triathlete I've spent 30 hours training and handling schoolwork, so I know how valuable tutoring time is. That's why my approach to teaching isn't just about lecturing, or repeating problems, but about creating unique and challenging questions that help students understand how to approach problems from different angles. It may sound simple, but I've found it to be quite effective. For example, if I were to help a student improve on the math section of their SAT the first thing I would do is have them take a diagnostic, or practice exam. From there, I would have the student explain to me how they solved each problem they got correct. Next, I would have the student tackle the problems they got wrong and try and identify silly mistakes from a lack of comprehension. At this point I would have a solid understanding of the skills and problem types that my student would be comfortable and uncomfortable with. With this knowledge, I would then curate lesson plans to bridge the gaps in knowledge utilizing lecture slides + practice problems to ensure that by the end of our lessons they would have a complete understanding of how to tackle every single problem they might encounter on the SAT math section. While this methodology may not be unique to myself as a tutor, I believe that my desire to learn more about my students hobbies, personality, and outside life sets me apart from other tutors. I hope that my students will learn to look forward to my lessons as an opportunity to not only learn but talk about their week. I love to share stories about my life and I have found that after a while this helps even the shyest student open up and share some of theirs.
