2016 - I was a social-cultural, design and architecture animator at Ville de Montreal in summer 2016. My tasks were to animate kids from age of 0 to 12 in different parks around the borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro. Animations consisted of reading short stories to kids, hosting arts and craft sessions and sports activities. In our reading sessions, I’ve taught to my wide spectrum of young audiences from knowing simple alphabets and numbers through storytelling to some basic principles of design and architecture as well as philosophy. And in my arts and craft session, I invited my young audiences to apply what they learned in the reading session into practice. And the sports activities were merely designed for kids to get most out of summer!
This was a memorable and rewarding experience for me since this is the first job in which I could truly share the knowledge from my academic field with our future generation. I felt particularly excited being able to explain philosophical concepts (i.e. duck/rabbit ambiguity) to kids in an interesting and motivating fashion and the significance of sustainability, beauty and practicality in architecture through activities involving building model houses with recyclable materials. Through various activities mentioned, I also encouraged children to relate disciplines from one to another by enlighten them with the idea of living together in a community (a concept from philosopher Martin Heidegger) through the understanding of architecture.
This job allowed me to practice my ability to be patient as well as being a leader as my role was to direct and instruct my audiences to complete certain tasks as well as to inspire them by doing so.
2017- It was an honor for me to be invited by Taoshan elementary school to be a guest teacher in academic year 2016-2017. My tasks in Taoshan elementary school were designing a course curriculum for classes from grade one to six as well as giving course lectures daily based on the curriculum I designed. The course consisted of giving Taiwanese students an overview of Canadian culture in general from Canadian geography to politics. The idea of teaching such is to allow students to understand the fundamental differences and similarities between Canada and Taiwan. Also, the course made an emphasis on the Canadian indigenous tribes such as Inuits and Iroquois. As most students are Atayal, an indigenous tribe in Taiwan, the course content allowed students to actively engage into the course materials. Emphasizing on Canadian indigenous tribes allowed students to once again draw an accurate comparison between their own tribe and the Canadian indigenous populations.
Teaching in Taishan elementary school was extremely valuable and priceless not only because it allowed me, through lectures in the classroom, to communicate with students having a widely different cultural background, but it also allowed me to experience the lifestyle and habits of the locals as I was living in the dormitory few feets away from the classrooms along with other teachers and personnels of the school. By living with the locals daily, I had the opportunity to widen my world view as well as to accept the lifestyles of others. This job allowed me to be patient since due to the restrictions in transportation and distance, I need to stay in the campus five days a week. Still, the wonder of the magnificent mountain ridges and rivers of the surrounding fed my spirit and I well used my patience developed on my teaching. This job allowed me to communicate with a simplistic tone as I need to teach young children advanced concepts such as politics. Moreover, this job also allowed me to further train my skills in communication since due to the language barrier between myself and the locals, I need to employ various techniques of communication such as body languages to communicate my thought, with the assistance of the local English teacher. Through this, I learned that communications among individuals often go beyond words and phrases.
Overall, this job was extremely meaningful for myself and for those I have taught or have taken benefit from my teaching since my internship in Taoshan elementary school demonstrated that education may not only foster one's knowledge, but it also lessen the distance separating individuals as knowledge is universal. Also, the program allowed me to discover the intellectuality of the students in Taoshan as these students have made great use of intuition in their everyday’s life in the mountain. Accordingly, I found that access of education is extremely important for them to explore their intellectual potential and to further pursuit their road to higher education and beyond.
2018 - I am currently working as a private tutor giving lessons to students with learning difficulties in libraries around the Island of Montreal.
