I'm a recent graduate from University of Melbourne where I've completed my Bachelor of Science (neuroscience major) with a concurrent diploma of music. I have been tutoring VCE maths for almost four years via online and in person modes.
I have a background in university maths and have achieved a 7/7 (or H1) average for my neuroscience major. I attribute this success to effective study techniques which I look to pass onto my students.

As a tutor, I work toward confidence and autonomy in the student's work, I'm there to help and encourage students to take the lead.
I teach students firstly the principles and nuances of the content they're presented with. We revisit tricky questions and concepts from previous weeks to beat the forgetting curve. We discuss exam technique and the power of organisation and planning, and how effective study and organisation gives the student more downtime in the long-run. I want to give students more than an understanding of the content, and expect them to value and utilise the study and organisation techniques that I employ in our courses.
Because of my diverse education background and success in university mathematics, I pride myself on tailoring my explanations and lessons to suit each student's thinking style and weaknesses.

1st session: Fill out new student's form. Introductions, expectations, set up a shared onenote and goodnotes page to keep track of past questions, homework, and topics that need revisiting. I give student a range of questions to assess strengths and weakness, make a progress plan.

What a usual lesson looks like:

1. Work on current classroom work. Take this opportunity to practise fundamental knowledge that may be lacking, or elaborate on the content being presented. Make sure that the core concept is well-understood, as 'high-yield' questions examine conceptual understanding rather than methods/memorisation.

2. Discuss homework from previous week. I write solutions to homework during the week. Compare solutions, assess clarity and coherence of the working out.

3. I keep a page with previous questions and topics students have struggled with. I rewrite and tweak the questions to probe the same understanding and skills, but the questions are new to the students. We revisit the same topics periodically over semester to beat the learning curve. This makes revision at exam-time more manageable.

4. At end of lesson spend 5 mins to write summary with key topics and formulas. I will assign homework.
