About Gurman

Thanks for checking out my profile!

I completed the IB programme at Turner Fenton Secondary School in Brampton. During my time in physics class, I served as a voluntary teacher's assistant who helped check through lessons, worksheets, and answer keys for quizzes and tests to locate and correct potential mistakes. I'd always find myself helping out my peers in school, discovering where students struggled the most and fostering a class which was interested and engaged in learning physics, rather than one that saw it as another arduous subject. I graduated from high school with a 100% in all physics and math classes in grades 11 and 12.

I'll soon be in my fourth year in the Astronomy and Physics Specialist program at UofT. I have led several recognized study groups for physics classes, and I am Vice President of UofT's Undergraduate Astronomy Union. I have also previously been appointed as a TA under the math department at UofT, teaching first year differential calculus. This experience helped mold me into a great teacher, especially in tandem with my strong academic record; I maintain a 90%+ average over all physics classes I have taken so far at the university:

PHY151: Foundations of Physics I
PHY152: Foundations of Physics II
PHY224: Practical Physics I
PHY250: Electricity and Magnetism
PHY252: Thermal Physics
PHY254: Classical Mechanics
PHY256: Introduction to Quantum Physics
PHY350: Electromagnetic Theory
PHY354: Advanced Classical Mechanics
PHY356: Quantum Mechanics I
CTA200: Computational Astrophysics
AST221: Stars and Planets
AST222: Galaxies and Cosmology
AST320: Introduction to Astrophysics
AST326: Practical Astronomy

I hope to continue using my skills to improve other students' understanding of, and performance in, mathematics and physics.

I look forward to working with you!

***I will NOT complete or directly aid in the completion of any work that is being marked. Not only is this unethical and against the rules set out by your academic institution, but it also prevents you, the student, from accruing the experience and proficiency necessary to succeed in STEM subjects down the road.***

I work with first year undergraduate university students, and students in all years of high school (grades 9-12).

I understand - physics and math can seem daunting with their many formulae and constants that all seem to get jumbled up. Drawing inspiration from my wonderful teachers, I avoid this confusion by helping you develop an intuitive understanding of subject matter rather than trying to force its memorization. I'll present real-world situations in which you'd encounter physics and mathematics, and leverage this familiarity to help you grasp what the numbers are really conveying. This leads to a deeper comprehension of physical situations and word problems, and from there, picking out key information and solving a problem becomes second nature.

I'll also pay close attention to your areas of improvement, whether they are methodological or related to a specific course topic. If need be, I'll rebuild from the ground up the strategies you apply when working on problems. I also firmly believe that, second to developing intuition, practice makes perfect, so I'll engage you in a multitude of practice problems that improve not only your understanding of a topic, but your working efficiency, problem-solving abilities, and, most importantly, critical thinking skills.

In reality, you cannot entirely avoid all the numbers and equations; they are fundamental to these subjects. But, by learning in an intuitive manner and applying what you have learned through practice, physics and mathematics will become as fun and rewarding as they now seem challenging.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

Since I was in elementary school, I'd always wondered how the physical world around me worked. Moreover, space intrigued me as it was something that seemed so inaccessible, but at the same time something that scientists were able to learn so much about. I found myself wanting to contribute to this kind of research in the future, so I naturally became interested in the subject of physics and the mathematics through which it is communicated. My motivation to become a researcher has only increased since then, and as of fall 2021, I will have begun my journey of pursuing a degree in Astronomy and Physics at the University of Toronto.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

Being at the forefront of astronomical research has always been a dream of mine, and my passion lies in the prospect of expanding the wealth of knowledge about the cosmos that humans have accumulated since civilization first arose. This passion extends to my tutees who I wish to aid and inspire on their own academic journeys, whether or not these be within STEM. Scientific and mathematical literacy is becoming increasingly important in all fields, and so it makes me glad to know that I can facilitate the learning and growth of students in a variety of fields using my knowledge in math and physics.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I enjoy being able to provide students with a learning opportunity that is more tailored to their needs and learning styles than what can be offered in a class setting. It's a great feeling when students have that 'aha!' moment when they find out how to solve a problem they've been stuck on, because it shows me that I was really able to help them out and provide them with a novel approach to applying their knowledge. I feel that the strategies I use to tutor also make content more tangible for students, so these moments happen more often than not!
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

I was extremely lucky to have a fantastic physics teacher for both semesters of physics in high school. He inspired many of the methods I use to tutor, as he used an approach to teaching that emphasized building and applying foundational knowledge rather than memorizing and regurgitating what was taught. I can definitely say that this was vital to my success in the physics course, and I hope I will be able to say the same for my own students.
  • What are your keys to success?

I believe anyone can be successful in what they do as long as they put forth full effort towards achieving their goals. In terms of academics, this means to find what subjects enthuse you, and to spend a little extra time to excel at those subjects and become a master of your trade. It's always good to go beyond what is being taught in school and learn ahead, to make yourself stand out from the crowd and for others to be able to recognize your passion. On another note, practice makes perfect! You can amass all the knowledge you want, but if you lack the ability to apply it, it is of little use. Teachers assign homework for a reason!
