About Rian

Hi, I'm Rian! I'm currently a student majoring in Human Biology, with a strong academic background in both math and science. Throughout my own studies, I've consistently done well in math and chemistry coursework, and I've carried that same discipline and attention to detail into my tutoring.

I have formal tutoring experience helping high school students strengthen their understanding of math and chemistry. In one case, I worked with a student who was struggling to keep up in class, and through consistent, focused sessions, helped them go from a C to a B+. Seeing that kind of progress is exactly why I love tutoring, it's proof that the right explanation, at the right pace, can genuinely change how a student experiences a subject.

Whether a student is trying to catch up, stay on top of a fast-moving class, or simply build more confidence in math or chemistry, I approach every lesson with patience, clear communication, and genuine care for their progress. I take tutoring seriously: I show up prepared, I listen closely to where a student is struggling, and I adjust my approach until it actually works for them, not just a one-size-fits-all method. My goal isn't just to help with today's homework, but to help students build the kind of understanding that sticks.

My Approach to Tutoring

My teaching methodology
I believe the best way to learn math and chemistry isn't through memorization, but through understanding the why behind each concept. When a student understands the underlying logic, they can apply it to new problems instead of just recognizing patterns from homework. I break down complex topics into smaller, manageable steps, and I always check for understanding before moving forward, rather than assuming a nod means it clicked. I also adapt my teaching style to each student: some learn best through visual diagrams, others through working problems hands-on, and some need more real-world examples to make abstract concepts click.

A typical lesson
Each lesson usually starts with a quick check-in on what's been covered in class and where the student is feeling stuck. From there, I'll briefly explain or review the core concept, then move into guided practice where we work through problems together, I ask questions to walk the student toward the answer rather than just giving it to them. Toward the end of the session, I have the student try a problem independently so I can see what's sticking and what needs more review. If there's an upcoming test or assignment, I tailor the lesson around that so the student feels prepared.

What sets me apart
As a Human Biology student, I've built a strong foundation in both math and science through my own coursework, and I understand what it takes to really grasp these subjects rather than just get through them. I remember what it's like to struggle with a tricky concept in high school, and I use that perspective to explain things in a way that actually makes sense, not just textbook language. I'm patient, easy to talk to, and genuinely enjoy the moment when something finally clicks for a student. I create a space where there are no "dumb" questions, which makes a big difference for students who are hesitant to speak up in a classroom setting.

Who my lessons are for
My lessons are best suited for students in grades 9 through 12 studying math (Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, or Calculus) or Chemistry, at the general or standard high school level. However, I don't currently teach AP-level coursework. I work well with students who are trying to keep up with a fast-moving class, those preparing for an upcoming test or quiz, and those who just want to build a stronger foundation before things get harder later in the year.
