About Ryan
My guitar teaching philosophy is rooted in two principles: play with purpose, and learn through music you love. I don’t believe in generic exercises or rigid programs. Instead, I craft each lesson around a student’s goals, interests, and strengths—whether that means playing indie rock, composing instrumental pieces, improvising jazz lines, or recording ambient loops. We work on core skills like clean fretting, hand synchronization, rhythmic feel, and tone production, but those are always placed within a musical framework. I love introducing theory as a storytelling tool: not “this is a ii-V-I” but “this is how the harmony pulls your ear toward resolution.” Creativity is present from day one. I often use open-ended tasks like “compose a short piece around a single rhythmic idea” or “reimagine a verse in a minor key.” One of the most rewarding projects I’ve led involved helping a student adapt their poetry into song lyrics, and then building guitar parts to support their vocal delivery. These kinds of collaborations allow technique and artistry to evolve together. I also emphasize mindful practice, helping students set achievable weekly goals and develop strategies for when motivation dips or plateaus arise. Above all, I aim to cultivate self-awareness in my students—not just “how to play,” but how to listen, shape, and feel their music. Growth is more than speed or complexity; it’s about finding your voice and building a lasting connection with your instrument.

My teaching philosophy revolves around making the process of learning guitar approachable, fun, and personally meaningful. We start by mastering fundamental techniques—posture, finger strength, chord shapes, and rhythm patterns—always applied through music that excites you, whether it’s indie rock, acoustic folk, funk, or blues.
I weave in music theory in a way that feels practical and relevant so you understand how your fingers and ears connect to the structure of the music. Communication is at the heart of every lesson—I always check in to understand how you're feeling, what you're enjoying, and where you may be struggling. I tailor each session using visual tools, audio examples, play-alongs, or looping techniques depending on what keeps you most engaged.
My goal is for every lesson to be a step forward in your confidence and creativity. In addition to core playing skills, I teach performance techniques, sound shaping, songwriting, reading lead sheets, and creative improvisation. Whether you’re picking up the guitar for the first time or returning after a break, I help you reconnect with music in a way that feels authentic and exciting.
