About Teresa

I have been teaching for over 20 years as a TK-6th grade teacher in Southern California for a public school district. I was also a Teacher on Special Assignments in the area of Science and I am very familiar with the standards and the best ways to access a deeper understanding of material. I have a Master's Degree from Montana State University in the area of Science Education, along with Google certification, and STEM certification, and work with NASA and JPL. In the classroom, I used my unusual knack for multimedia to help students as young as third grade learn to create, edit, and produce their videos including the school's news network. My connections with those in the multimedia industry have landed me on panels at VidCon, EduCon, ScIC, and more. I love teaching and I love making learning fun. I always know we have had a good day when a student says, "The day is over already? Awww, man!" Yes, that really does happen when you find ways to love learning.

As a tutor, I think getting to know the student is the most important way to start. I dial into their interests and their needs to make the lessons as engaging and efficient as possible. After getting to know students, I usually introduce a question or topic for them to think about and discuss with the group or with me. After we have a firm understanding of expectations, needs, and preferences, I tailor my lesson to include all of those things. After we have discussed their area of need, we discuss what is the most pressing need. I push students to look for solutions and guide them when they are stuck. If they are unable to do a type of writing, science, math, or history after discussion, I generally model the expected outcome. Next, the student and I will go through the second example together. Finally, the student will be asked to try some independently while I supervise. To finish off we review their results, what successes and what struggle they had and make a plan for the next session.

Find out more about Teresa

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've been a teacher for over 20 years, and there's nothing more fun than teaching others to live learning! I've been tutoring since my college days and there's just something special about the connections you make in tutoring.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I like tutoring almost any subject. I have a Master's in Science Education and a STEM certification along with my teaching credential. I love teaching kids to think critically and independently and find ways to weave that into all my tutoring. I'm a very strong elementary math tutor, I've grown quite strong at tutoring writing, science is my first love, and technology makes my heart happy when I see kids surpass their peers in basic life skills like making slide shows and creating ways to communicate with others through technology.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Some of my best role models have been colleagues, including my own sisters. I had some great science teachers in junior high and college that helped light the fire of curiosity.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor should first and foremost, understand their student. This means knowing them as a person and figuring out where they are starting from in the subject they've come to you for. Once you make personal connections and tailor your lessons to their needs, the time flies, and their grades go up.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In college, I went in for an interview to be a summer camp counselor. The man behind the desk asked if I knew how to swim. When I said yes, he handed me a Red Cross book on swimming and walked me out to the community college pool. He had me watch one demo lesson and then hired me on the spot. I ended up becoming a teacher of the year based on input from peers and students. All I did was figure out what kids could and couldn't do and make everything a game. This matches teaching in any situation. Figure out what they need to know and make it fun.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

As a kid, I had no belief in myself. I would not have believed you if you'd told me I'd be able to take astrophysics or explain physics to 5th graders. With the support of mentors, colleagues, and students who believed in me, I now feel like I could learn to teach anything.!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Teaching in general fills my heart. Teaching about science excites me and gives me great hope. I don't teach memorization of facts, but focus on critical thinking, asking students to use their skills and ability to communicate to prove what they know and how they know it. This is true in math, science, literature analysis, and beyond. I also absolutely love turning non-readers into book worms by providing the right books and modeling how fun reading can be.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I'm more than a tutor, I'm an educator down to my DNA. Exploring, explaining, engaging, elaborating and evaluating de critical life skills and I have the ability to teach those skills.
