About Doug

I have been in the field of web development for over 20 years. Although I have worked in design studios as a resident web developer, mostly I have freelanced businesses and individuals as clients. I am have a extensive understanding about all things web development from basic to advanced areas.

About the lesson

Teaching is a passion of mine, and I'm keen to adapt the lessons where you are at with coding skills and current knowledge. Lessons will be outcome driven and we will work together towards your goals. I am friendly and casual, it will be an easy and fun time showing you the ropes in detail and with explanations. I will of course give you my recommendations based on personal experience and your own desired outcomes.

Doug has extensive commercial programming experience, and over the last decade I have hired him again and again to build website solutions from the simple to highly tailored custom sites. From a learning perspective you want someone teaching you who knows what businesses want and how to deliver that solution. More important than that though is the ability of your mentor to communicate with you regarding the concepts of your chosen subject - in this case programming. Doug would be in my opinion a very good choice, as has a relaxed friendly manner, is very easy to get on with and has a very sound understanding of all the core concepts of programming. He has the ability to communicate intricate technical concepts at different levels of understanding, from the layman up. This is really what you want, as if you don't have a mentor who can assist you to understand the concepts of a subject, to think with them and apply them, then you are basically wasting your time. Passing an exam gets you a certificate, really understanding and being able to apply the concepts of a subject involves more work but will result in the ability to apply that subject and get results. That will assist both businesses and yourself to achieve goals. I would highly recommend you give Doug a go, he'll help you unravel your misconceptions and set you on the path to true understanding in this subject and thus give you the ability to obtain solid results with your coding.

Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?
I have had a PC for a long time - my family got and it was a very slow and big 286. So using DOS and command line to access games was my first experience. As well as Windows 3.1, which was very impressive at the time.
What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?
Dreamweaver - although I don't use it so much now - has been the most useful and pivotal technology that helped me code and understand coding principles. Software is getting more and more powerful, but looking back, it was always powerful since day one. With so much free software out there, and so much online support for coders, its never been a better time to try your hand at coding.
Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.
My skills range from creating & maintaining small to large websites. I enjoy taking an interest in business online needs and finding the right solution.
Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?
I'll be honest, they don't inspire me - although they impress me. I do not have any role models like this, what does inspire me is when online business ideas are conceived and made to work.
What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?
I would agree, but after some conversations and time walking through how things work, it wouldn't take long to feel more at home with IT.
What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?
Playing the guitar, sketching portraits, watching TV, and brainstorming online business ideas. I also love to teach my skills to people
