About Mitch

I did not start out as a “math person.” In middle school and high school even simple algebra confused me. I treated math as a pointless required class and barely graduated with the minimum passing grade. After high school I spent about a year trying to teach myself physics and whatever math I needed to understand it. That effort turned into a table full of textbooks: every explanation sent me to another book, and the confusion piled up. I was accepted to college, but I knew I had to start over. I enrolled in the lowest-level math course and worked my way up until I could study physics properly.
What I learned then is what I now build every lesson around. Math is rarely taught in school as what it actually is: a set of tools for solving problems and thinking clearly. Once I saw it that way, the subject became simpler and more useful than anyone had shown me. I also learned that I do not learn well from a standard lecture. I learn by working a problem from more than one angle until it clicks. That is why I became a teacher. I wanted to give students the guidance I did not have, so they would not waste years circling the same confusion.
I earned a B.S. in Physics (with 15 graduate credit hours), a B.S. in Mathematics, and an M.S. in Mathematics. I began as a teaching assistant and have taught undergraduate mathematics and physics for 17 years. I have also taught high school mathematics, physics, and computer science for four years, and I teach dual-enrollment math. As an AP tutor I have a consistent record: about 90 percent of my AP students earn a 5 and the rest earn a 4.
I work with students who dislike math and with students who already enjoy a challenge. Because I was the student who needed the idea explained another way, that is how I teach. I listen first, find how you think, and rebuild the lesson around that. I keep explaining a concept in different forms until it matches the way you understand it, then we practice until you can do the next problem without me.
I tutor math and physics from high school through college, including algebra, geometry, precalculus, calculus, AP Calculus, AP Physics, and dual-enrollment courses. I am based in the Mount Pleasant / Charleston area and am available for online lessons as well as local in-person work.
If you want a tutor who remembers what it feels like to be lost—and who has spent years turning that into a method that works—message me with the course and the specific topic that is giving you trouble. We can start there.

I struggled with math throughout middle school and high school then spent a year drowning in textbooks before I started college at the lowest math course. That path led to degrees in physics and mathematics and 17 years teaching college and AP students. I teach the way I wish someone had taught me: I find how you think, explain the idea from more than one angle, and treat math as problem-solving instead of memorization. If that sounds useful, reach out and tell me what your goals are.
