About Tyler
My name is Tyler, but I also go by "Ty." I am a recent graduate with a B.S. in Computer Science and Data Science and a minor in Japanese. I come from a small liberal arts college where I was a tutor for the Computer Science department for two years. I am currently a tutor for students at the K-12 academic level studying everything from English and History to Math and Chemistry.
I play chess as a hobby because I find it easy to draw connections between playing chess and living life. After playing the game for just over 3 years with serious study, I have come to appreciate the game at a much deeper level, and I'm excited to develop a deeper understanding. My goal is to be able to play a strong game against one of my best friends and hopefully come out on top.
I know how difficult it is to acknowledge when you might need help, so I want to make it as clear as possible that being helped up to a certain level of understanding does not make your accomplishments any less legitimate! What is ultimately important is that you are able to use your new knowledge to pave your own path forward.
How do you think I got to where I am now?

My style of teaching not only encourages but forces you to make mistakes as a way of learning. You will not have a tutor or an engine by your side as you play, so it is important to use these mistakes as a way to build your repertoire of tactical and strategic ideas.
-> Always start sessions with me with a game to understand your level.
-> Lesson in analysis, go over mistakes, and learn strategies that may keep you in better shape for future games.
-> Exercises include:
- Drills of moves in the opening phases for White and Black
- Positions from my own games to look at strategy developments in the middlegame, advantage conversion, and solid defense.
- Proper endgame progression and checkmate patterns.
My lesson structures are geared toward anyone from total beginners to intermediate-level players up to 1350. With proper study and dedication, your elo should increase substantially over time. Most of all, I hope you have more fun with the game and get to appreciate chess at a deeper level.
