About Michael
I am a 17 year old highschool graduate with a love for Chess, Mathematics and Computer Science among other things. I have taken many tutoring opportunities in the past and I love the process of teaching and allowing students to understand something they previously didn't in a field which I have passion for. I have been playing Chess for over 12 years now, have sizeable achievements in the sport, and participated in coaching for the school for about 2 years. I usually work with a class of almost 20 primary school students, but I would much rather do individual coaching.

When it comes to chess, my lessons can hover around those who have either just learnt the rules, or have been playing at a casual level for a bit (Around 0-1300 ELO). Unlike many coaches who constantly expose students to new openings before they can even spot 1 move threats, my teaching philosophy prioritizes the aspects of chess which would allow students to find success and win their games, even when they move to higher brackets of play. I personally like to first introduce a simple and straight-forward opening, from which I can then expose them to basic strategy and what is most important at this level, tactical vision. This method would allow students to not be heavily reliant on their memory of the first few moves but rather to use their brain for problem solving and calculating, what chess is truly about. I am also a huge fan of blindfold chess as a training method for calculation, for when the student is at an appropriate level of understanding.
I have coached chess for over 2 years at my school, have also participated in peer tutoring, and have personally taught some of my friends aspects of mathematics, chess, and java programming. I have many chess achievements including winning the 2020 junior championships of my state and being the runner up in the Australian junior chess championships as well as many victories in school teams chess championships.
I tutor solely online and prefer 1 hour lessons, but I am down to arrange any time length. Mostly targeted for kids and primary school students.
