About Dr Sophie
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the daunting tasks of writing essays, preparing for exams, or completing research projects? I'm here to help!
I am an experienced academic coach providing personalised mentoring and support to social science students. Over the past six years I have helped students enhance their academic skills and achieve better outcomes. I have a BSc in Psychology from the University of Birmingham, a Masters and PhD in Criminology from the University of Cambridge, and postdoctoral research experience in Social Work from the University of Melbourne. As a result of this experience I understand first hand the unique needs and skills required for students in the social sciences, particularly psychology. Despite exploring other disciplines in my postgraduate studies, psychology remains my true love and the lens through which these interconnected disciplines are often examined.
I have experience working as an undergraduate supervisor, mentor, and outreach officer in the University of Cambridge. The training and qualifications I received during my time in these roles has equipped me with knowledge and pedagogical tools needed to effectively support and mentor students.
During my time working as an academic coach and tutor I have developed a particular interest in supporting students in higher education who face barriers such as mental health conditions and specific learning difficulties. I work with these students to manage challenges like anxiety, stress, concentration issues, and time management.
The world of study can be an incredibly lonely and intimidating place, something I have experienced firsthand. However, I firmly believe that everyone can thrive with the right support and guidance.

As an academic coach I provide a wide range of services which can be tailored to your individual needs. In our one-to-one sessions I am able to offer support in the following areas — this list is not exhaustive:
Planning and Conducting Research
* Facilitating brainstorming sessions to generate and focus ideas
* Conducting literature reviews and critically appraising the evidence
* Formulating clear research questions or hypotheses
* Identifying and developing appropriate methodological approaches
* Identifying and conducting appropriate forms of analysis
* Planning and structuring essays and dissertations
* Providing feedback on drafts for clarity, coherence, and argument strength
* Offering grammar and style guidance
* Assisting with citation and referencing
Time Management and Organisation
* Developing realistic timelines and setting achievable goals for assignments * Providing strategies for staying organised and managing time effectively
Academic Tools and Software
* Using SPSS for descriptive and basic inferential statistical tests
* Using NVivo for organising and coding qualitative data
* Using Zotero for reference management
* Using Qualtrics for survey development and distribution
Applications
* Researching and selecting suitable programmes and understanding application requirements and deadlines.
* Assisting with personal statement writing and applications.
* Coaching for university interviews, including practice questions and feedback on responses.
Administrative Tasks
* Assisting with navigating administrative processes professionally, including writing emails to academics, filling in applications, preparing for meetings, and seeking support from university services.
Please note that it is unlikely that I will be able to provide specific subject matter expertise for your particular project or area of study. My extensive background in social science research and academic mentoring, however, has allowed me to assist students effectively across a range of disciplines. In the past, I have supported students in fields including, but not limited to, criminology, psychology, education, nursing, economics, law, and creative writing.
