About Jody

I have been tutoring math for over 30 years. I joined Broward College in 2005, the college where I earned my AA degree years before. During my 18 years at Broward College, I earned 3 of the highest honors awarded to faculty. - Professor of the Year (first-year teaching) - Endowed Teaching Chair Award - Online Professor of the Year. I love teaching math and I want to continue inspiring young people.

My style of teaching all starts with the student's comfort level, which is paramount. I try and explain the topic in simple "English" and then we work on the math part of the process. An advantage of using a seasoned tutor is that I will first try and teach the way the student was originally taught by their instructor to reduce any confusion. However, that approach does not always work. So my next option is what sets me apart from other tutors, which is my "superpower." My "superpower" is having the ability to break down hard concepts into small easy steps, making math seem and feel simple. I teach mathematics and algebra remotely to students of all ages, including college. Hopefully, by the end of our relationship, the student has overcome many of their fears about math!

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

It appears that I did not choose tutoring and teaching, but instead, they chose me. When I was in high school, I would help other students with their math homework. It just came very easy to me. All through my college days, tutoring other classmates became the norm before and after class. In fact, tutoring gave me very strong friendships that have lasted my lifetime.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I am a retired college professor with strong experience working with struggling students specializing in all types of Algebra from middle school, high school, and college. I have been tutoring and teaching Algebra for over 30 years.

I like to discuss how math effects the real world we live in and how students can use math and logic skills in other areas of their day-to-day lives.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

When I was getting my AA degree, my favorite Professor recognized my affinity and talent towards math, and he refused to give me my final grade until I agreed to consider a career in teaching math. I owe my fabulous career to him and have let him know it throughout the years.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

In my opinion, teaching and tutoring is the best way to learn any math concept thoroughly. The more I taught, the more I tutored, the better I understood that topic and the pitfalls and was easily able to pass that information on to my students.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Andrew, dear Andrew. One of my first Algebra students who, by his own admission, never paid attention in high school math. Now in College, he wanted to start taking school seriously, but was so far behind, he didn't think it was possible to catch up. Andrew came to my office hours every single day for the entire semester where I tutored and mentored him. Andrew not only graduated my class with an "A," but he passed all of his future math classes with A's. The trick was, I not only taught him Algebra, I taught him how to study.

Fast forward to 2023, Andrew received a full scholastic scholarship to a large private university and is now a respected Emergency Room Medical Doctor in one of the largest high level hospitals in the country.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

On the first day of teaching a class (remote or face-to-face), my diverse class of students tend stare at me like little deer caught in headlights. Most students dislike or even fear math, having had bad experiences with the subject.

Many students state that they have already failed a math class at some point in their lifetime. Some believe they are terrible in math and will probably fail this course too. This bias may convince them to be initially distrustful of me as their instructor. Not only do I have to find a way to impart a semester's worth of mathematical concepts, but I first must find a way of getting past the students' phobias and math anxieties. This is not an easy process, especially over one short semester.

Thankfully, I assuage their fears by projecting a positive attitude of "YOU CAN" in every situation and/or problem the student may face throughout the semester. I show them that although math is challenging, it can be very rewarding!

It is my belief that this type of attitude toward students will further develop their self-esteem and help them realize that, in the future, they can accomplish whatever they set out to do.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

As crazy as it sounds to most people, my passion is math and problem solving.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions)?

You have to engage the student in their first 30 minutes of their tutoring session to believe that with your help they will be able to learn the material necessary to pass their class.

Teaching math concepts in a simplistic manner is easy, getting the students to buy into their own abilities is the hard part…that takes a Super Professor.

In the College where I taught for 17 years, there were approximately 1,300 Professors, and I was a winner of the Professor of the Year (twice) and then the prestigious Award of an Endowed Teaching Chair, which I believe solidifies my SuperProf status.
