I am an artist and educator with an MFA in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), Atlanta. My work and teaching focus on observational drawing, memory-based practice, and visual storytelling. My teaching method is grounded in observation, structured skill-building, and reflective practice. I focus on helping students learn how to see before learning how to execute, emphasizing fundamentals such as proportion, value, light, and composition. I combine demonstration, guided practice, and constructive critique, encouraging students to work from reference while developing the ability to draw and paint from memory and personal interpretation. I adapt my teaching approach to each student’s level and learning pace, ensuring an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
A typical lesson begins with a short warm-up exercise to sharpen observation and loosen the hand, followed by a focused demonstration related to the day’s topic (such as tonal values, portrait proportions, or light and shadow). Students then work on a guided exercise or project while receiving real-time feedback. The session concludes with a brief critique and reflection, where students discuss challenges, progress, and next steps. Assignments are tailored to reinforce skills developed during the lesson and encourage independent practice.
What sets me apart is my ability to guide students in developing both technical skills and creative confidence. I design my own structured lesson plans and syllabi, allowing me to tailor instruction to individual goals rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. My background as a practicing artist and MFA graduate enables me to bridge academic rigor with practical, real-world artistic thinking. I am especially attentive to students who are still discovering their creative voice, helping them build confidence through clear guidance and thoughtful critique.
