About William
You can succeed in math—I'm here to help you prove it to yourself. I'm a university professor and former U.S. Navy instructor with over two decades of experience teaching mathematics and engineering. I've taught everything from Algebra I to advanced college calculus, both in the U.S. and abroad, and I know that confidence in math comes not from shortcuts, but from clear explanations, patient support, and meaningful practice. If you’ve ever felt like math "just isn’t your thing," I’m here to change that. Whether you're preparing for an important test, trying to catch up, or want to get ahead, I’ll meet you at your level and help you build both skills and confidence. Every student can learn math—with the right guidance and encouragement. Let’s make math make sense—together.

My Tutoring Approach: Making Math Make Sense—From Algebra to Engineering-Level Calculus
I bring decades of experience as a math and engineering professor—combined with a calm, supportive teaching style honed in the U.S. Navy Nuclear Program and in classrooms across the world. Whether you're struggling with algebra, prepping for the SAT, or powering through college calculus, I help students build confidence and mastery by connecting abstract math to real-world logic and applications.
Teaching Method and Techniques
I don’t believe in memorization for its own sake. I teach students to think mathematically—using number sense, visual models, and structured steps to unpack problems. I often start with concrete examples before building toward abstract generalization. I also use live drawing tools (whiteboard-style), scaffolded practice, and—when useful—AI tools like WolframAlpha and ChatGPT to show how modern math learners can augment their understanding.
Typical Lesson Plan
Check-in and Clarify Goals (5 min) – What's the current topic or pain point?
Concept Refresher (10 min) – A friendly walkthrough of key concepts, not a lecture.
Worked Example (10 min) – We solve a problem step-by-step, with time for questions.
Guided Practice (10 min) – You try a similar problem while I offer tips and check-ins.
Wrap-up and Next Steps (Optional resources or challenge problems)
Each session is customized, paced for the learner, and built to foster genuine math confidence.
What Sets Me Apart
I’m not just a tutor—I’m a professor who’s taught everything from high school-level algebra to advanced college statistics. I’ve worked with students from all walks of life: teens balancing school with sports, first-generation college students, and even veterans returning to school after years away. I understand that math can feel overwhelming, so I always work with patience, good humor, and real encouragement.
My experience includes:
Teaching at US Naval Nuclear Power School, Portland State University, Portland Community College, and internationally in China
Winning university-level teaching awards
Applying math professionally in engineering, risk analysis, and data science
Who the Lessons Are For
High School Students: Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB/BC, SAT/ACT Math Prep
College Students: College Algebra, Calculus I/II/III, Linear Algebra, Statistics, Differential Equations
