Philosophy of Teaching
Teaching well requires knowledge and expertise; knowledge and expertise are gained through research and execution. Adequate and reliable research/investigation requires thoughtful and methodical technique. These can lead to excellence in performance or execution, which can lead to excellence in instruction and to further research. The process of reliable research is cyclic and similar to the scientific method—it begins with a question.
When a question is asked, we want to know why things are the way they are; if we are not sure of the why, we then hypothesize. There may be several possible answers to our questions so all viable possibilities should be explored. In order to adequately and reliably find the answer, data collection is required. The collection of data can be the most exhausting, yet rewarding part of research. The information must be adequately cited to confirm validity, while multiple sources should be used and cited; this will help minimize information bias. Materials may include—but are not limited to—print (book, periodicals, ect.) or digital (JSTOR; electronic databases) formats. Once adequate and reliable sources have been accessed using a method of unbiased data collection, the next phase would be experimentation, execution or performance (E/E/P).
E/E/P is the culmination of all the prior steps. From the initial question to the hypothesized answer and the subsequent research, we are then able to experiment, execute or perform. It is important to remember the result is dependent upon the investment—one gets out what one puts in. Done properly, the cycle of methodical research can be perpetual: we gain (the) information and knowledge from research which leads to the E/E/P. With a better understanding of the information, the knowledge can be used to develop better research habits/patterns; this could lead to self-growth or the ability (and hopefully the desire) to share their knowledge by informative instruction, continuing the cycle of the teachers and students within a specific concentration.
