About Jake

I've been playing chess for five years now, pretty much every day. I'm at 2100 ELO on chess.com, which I'm pretty happy with. To get any better would require a much larger time commitment and a focus more on memorization than anything, which isn't really why chess is interesting to me. I like chess because I learned how to play it the way I want to play it -- bombastically, sacrificing pieces all over the place and going for checkmate before move twenty. I would call chess my biggest hobby. As a job, I'm trying to establish myself as an independent filmmaker, but I work as a chess coach and tutor for kids.

The best way to learn is to play. So, mostly, that's what we do. We play a game and, as a team, we try to discern why you made every move you did. Good moves have underlying reasons, so we try to establish those reasons first, and then we'll get into what moves could've better achieved your goals.

Then we'll go into a twenty-minute lesson. Not lectures, but puzzles, and dialogues, because if you're not enjoying what you're learning, then you're not really learning anything.
