About Julia
I discovered the impact of peer tutoring in High School. Every week, I used to tutor at a center for underprivileged youth in my home community. The center, “LaunchPad”, provided a safe environment for teenagers to go to after school. Here, I would tutor students in a variety of different subjects - Math, Science, and English. By volunteering at the LaunchPad I learned the importance of patience and encouragement. A simple “you’ve got this!” went a long way. Many of the students that I helped were also learning to manage attention deficits. They truly needed someone in their life to tell them that they can do it. This experience brought me much joy and satisfaction knowing that my support helped guide them to success. Also, I am deeply committed to the principle of mentorship. As a Big Sister to a Little Brother (with Big Brothers Big Sisters) for ten years, I understand the importance of being patient, nonjudgmental, and offer opportunities to view problems through a new lens.

The way that I teach is by approaching learning as a process, not a product. This is a lesson that is only taught in college. I emphasize the importance of enjoying the entirety of the education process. Everything taught is important and builds off of the last concept. The learning journey is not going to be easy by any means. However, it teaches one to critically think. Once we figure out how to solve a problem and why it is solved in a particular way shows that we fully understand the concept. Personally, being able to succeed by myself after a period of struggling is the most rewarding experience. Working with other students helps encourage one to continue to move forward. In the heat of discussions, we come up with creative ideas and see things in new perspectives. I look forward to incorporating a creative, inclusive environment as a tutor to help others succeed.
