About Brendan

I am a chess coach from Sydney, Australia, and I have been teaching children for over 18 years.

During this time, I’ve had the privilege of helping many young players make incredible progress. Some have risen all the way from their school chess Team F to Team A, while others have achieved even greater milestones — including becoming a national age-group champion within just one year of training.

I am known among Chinese chess parents worldwide for my professionalism, engaging teaching style, and the results I bring. What I value most is inspiring confidence in every child I work with, and showing them that chess can be both deeply educational and truly enjoyable.

About the lesson

-About my lessons

My classes are designed as online group lessons, which I believe is the best way for kids to learn chess — through fun interactions with their peers. Children are more motivated when they can share ideas, solve puzzles together, and even enjoy a little friendly competition.

-Teaching method and techniques
I don’t follow a rigid script or simply read from a book. Instead, I weave key chess concepts naturally into each lesson, making the learning both systematic and flexible. Just like sculpting a piece of art, I carefully observe the group’s overall progress and adjust the focus where it’s needed most — polishing the areas that require extra attention until everything comes together beautifully.

-Typical lesson plan
Each class runs for 2 hours. We begin with a puzzle warm-up to activate quick thinking and focus. The first hour is dedicated to theory combined with interactive discussions, where students learn key chess concepts in an engaging way. The second hour is a class tournament, where students play against each other, followed by game analysis — helping them immediately apply what they’ve learned and understand how to improve in real games.

-What sets me apart
I have a natural ability to connect with children. My teaching style is lively, humorous, and highly interactive — making even the most complex chess ideas simple and engaging. Instead of abstract theory, I translate chess into language and stories that kids can easily understand, ensuring they not only grasp the concepts but also enjoy the journey of learning.

-Who my lessons are for
My group classes are designed for students aged 5 to 18, from beginners to young players preparing for tournaments. Whether your child wants to learn the basics, build a solid foundation, or sharpen their competitive edge, they will find both challenge and encouragement in my lessons.
