About Matija

1st class Biochemistry graduate from Imperial College (top student in my cohort), currently doing a PhD in biophysics and cell biology. Over 4 years of tutoring experience in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology, as well as GCSE science subjects. In love with teaching and conveying my enthusiasm for science onto others!

About the lesson

I have accumulated 4 years of A-level tutoring experience during my undergraduate and Master's studies at Imperial College, having graduated in Biochemistry at the top of my cohort with a 1st class distinction grade. In 2023, I started a 4 year PhD at the Francis Crick Institute, where I'm currently working in advanced imaging, biophysics and cell biology with the hopes of going into an academic research career.

My past tutoring and mentoring efforts have proven to be an incredibly rewarding way to complement my love for science and teaching. I have followed multiple students through their respective A-level journeys, most of which have managed to obtain higher grades than they initially hoped for. Approach-wise, rather than focusing on raw content delivery, I always tried to make my lessons highly personalised, while encouraging my tutees to attain a considerable degree of independence in their learning endeavours. Techniques that place emphasis on active recall, like software-assisted spaced repetition and incremental reading, are some examples of innovative (and oddly scientific) approaches I attempt to implement in my lessons to maximise retention, helping the student get the most out of our time together. These more "outlandish" methods have worked exceptionally well with 2 of my students who suffered learning difficulties, allowing them to really hone in on their memorisation skills.

Beyond this, I regularly design custom practice worksheets for my classes that build exam technique in a more focused capacity, targeting the specific skills necessary to do well on an exam. I also attempt to make the whole process as fun and relaxed as possible, introducing additional content where appropriate and using a variety of graphical learning tools to make the subject matter more exciting and interesting. By expanding the scope of my lessons in such a manner, I have found that content retention and overall comprehension becomes significantly better, giving a new dimension to concepts which goes beyond the (sometimes dull) core syllabus. I like to believe that the multitude of approaches I employ, combined with my friendly attitude, strong work ethic, tailored tuition and an emphasis on building an organised structure for my tutees, makes me very well suited to follow students through their A-level and GCSE journeys.
